The Former Imaizumi Clinic Hand Washing Area (旧今泉医院手洗い場, Kyū Imaizumi Iin Tearaiba) is a concrete washing fixture of 1927 standing in the front garden of a rural clinic at Ouma Nishi in Mitsucho, Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture, added to the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 March 2004. It covers 1.8 square meters.
Almost everything on Japan's register of tangible cultural properties has a roof and walls. This does not. There is no interior to enter. What carries the registration is a piece of plumbing set into a garden.
Two larger structures share the plot, the clinic building at 221 square meters and the ward building at 81 square meters. All three were registered on the same day under separate numbers. This article covers the smallest of them.
Registered under a different criterion
The registration number is 23-0132 and the public notice was issued on 29 March 2004. The clinic and the ward were both registered under the criterion for buildings that serve as a model of design. The Former Imaizumi Clinic Hand Washing Area was not. It came in under a separate criterion, the one for structures that contribute to the historic character of the landscape.
The distinction matters. Nobody claimed this fixture was well designed. What was recorded is that it belongs where it stands. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that washing places of this kind were commonly provided at rural clinics of the period, and that patients used them before entering the building.
So the register here preserves a procedure rather than a piece of architecture. How a village doctor of that era expected people to approach his door is a difficult thing to document. The Former Imaizumi Clinic Hand Washing Area documents it as a physical object.
Where the water came from
The original source was a well. Water drawn from it was raised to a tank on the east side of the clinic, and gravity carried it from there to the tap in the front garden. In a village with no mains supply, an elevated tank was how you got pressure at a faucet.
The placement encodes a sequence. A patient came through the gate, crossed the garden, met the washing place on the way, washed, and only then went in to be seen. Position did the work that a sign would otherwise have had to do, and it did it more reliably.
In an era when infectious disease was a daily calculation for a country doctor, that was sound practice rather than decoration. The same logic sits at the entrance of every hospital today. If you go looking for it, search the line between the gate and the front door, in front of the clinic's Western facade. It sits low and planting grows around it, so an eye fixed on the porte cochere will pass straight over it.
Visiting
The plot is privately owned and closed. Toyokawa City records the owner of all three registered structures as a private individual, and no regular or special opening had been announced as of August 2026.
Because the fixture stands in the front garden rather than behind the buildings, it can sometimes be picked out from the public lane, depending on the gate and the hedge. Visitors cannot enter the grounds or approach it closely. What is reliably visible on a visit is the exterior of the clinic building and part of the garden in front of it.
Photography from the road is unrestricted. The plot is lived in, so do not keep a lens trained through the gate and do not leave a tripod standing. The lane is narrow and a parked car blocks it.
