About Hyogo

Hyogo Prefecture, located in central Honshu, represents Japan's only prefecture facing both Japan Sea and Seto Inland Sea. Housing World Cultural Heritage "Himeji Castle," it developed as international city centered on Kobe Port. Also represents region achieving recovery from 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

"Himeji Castle" (registered 1993), one of 12 existing keeps, is also called "White Egret Castle" for beautiful white plaster exterior. Keep groups and turret groups renovated to current form by Ikeda Terumasa in 1609 represent masterpieces collecting Japanese wooden architecture pinnacle techniques, with 8 structures designated as national treasures. Complex linked keep structure and spirally arranged baileys represent castle architecture summit balancing practical functionality with aesthetic perfection.

Kobe, developing as international trade port since 1868 opening, is known as international city with diverse cultural coexistence. Kitano Foreign District preserves Western architecture built as foreign settlement in Meiji period, with Weather Cock House and Moegi House as popular tourist spots. Port city Kobe night views, beloved as "10-million-dollar night views," particularly feature famous Mount Rokko views.

Awaji Island, Seto Inland Sea's largest island, connects to Honshu and Shikoku via Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Onaruto Bridge. Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, world's longest suspension bridge at 3,911 meters, serves as transportation hub connecting Kobe and Awaji Island. Island attractions include Awaji Island National Government Park, Awaji Hanasajiki, and Sumoto Castle ruins.

Arima Onsen, one of Japan's three ancient hot springs with over 1,300 years history, offers two spring qualities: kinsen (iron-sodium chloride strong salt springs) and ginsen (radium and carbonated springs). Famous as hot spring resort beloved by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, numerous luxury and long-established ryokan continue today.

Kinosaki Onsen, literarily famous as setting for Naoya Shiga's novel "At Kinosaki," represents hot spring resort with 1,300 years history. Seven public bath tours serve as specialty, each offering different benefits and atmospheres. Otani River with planted willows flows through hot spring town, creating atmospheric scenery.

Kobe beef, Hyogo Prefecture black wagyu beef, receives Kobe beef certification only when clearing strict quality standards. Globally famous for beautiful marbling, tender texture, and deep flavors, Kobe beef steaks represent luxury gourmet sought by numerous tourists.

Akashiyaki, Akashi City local cuisine origin, represents takoyaki roots. Made with egg-rich batter and characteristically eaten dipped in dashi broth. Using octopus caught in Akashi Strait, fluffy texture enjoys popularity.

Nada sake brewing, conducted from eastern Kobe City through Nishinomiya City regions, represents Japanese sake brewing known as premier sake region. Rokko famous water, quality sake rice, and Tamba toji techniques create famous brands including Hakutsuru, Gekkeikan, Kenbishin, and Kiku-Masamune. Sake brewery tours serve as popular tourist courses.

Takarazuka Revue, all-female theatrical company established in 1914, is beloved by numerous fans for glamorous revues and distinctive worldviews. Motto "purely, correctly, beautifully" produced numerous stars. Takarazuka Grand Theater hosts various performances year-round.
