The Office of the Former Yamashige Store
The Office (jimusho) marks the moment the Yamashige Store turned to face a new direction. Built in 1947, it stands on the eastern edge of the grounds against the prefectural road, looking north, where an earlier generation of buildings had addressed the old road to the west. It is a single-storey timber building of about 88 square metres, hip-roofed and clad in sheet metal, with an office room to the east, a reception room to the west, and an entrance porch projecting from the front of the office.
The firm was a ceramics wholesaler (tōjiki oroshidonya) on the slope above the north bank of the Seto River, in the Kitashintani district of Seto. The Kato family had built the business from the 1880s, and by the postwar years it was reaching outward again, including into ceramics for export. The owner's main residence is gone, but this office and eight other structures survive, all entered together on the national register in 2015. Seto City owns the site today.
Why It Was Registered
This is the building that records Seto's postwar recovery in the ceramics trade. When the firm widened its reach into export and other new lines, it built the Office beside the eastern new road, and the entrance and the centre of business shifted to this side of the grounds. From here goods came and went; the Office became the working hub of shipping in and out.
The reception room repays a close look. Its lower walls are lined with vertical boards, and the walls and ceiling are finished in plaster, a quiet, careful interior meant for receiving guests and customers. Registered Tangible Cultural Properties are listed for their contribution to the historic landscape rather than designated like Important Cultural Properties or National Treasures, and the Office was registered on this footing on 17 November 2015 (registration number 23-0435).
What to Look For
The entrance porch is the detail to find first. Projecting from the front of the office room, it gives a small ceremonial weight to what is otherwise a plain working building, the gesture of a firm presenting itself to the road. The hipped roof, low and broad, sits comfortably among the warehouses behind it.
Inside, the contrast between the two rooms tells the story. The office to the east was for the daily business of orders and shipping; the reception room to the west, with its board wainscot and plastered surfaces, was for meeting people. Set against the Old Office of 1914 on the western side, this 1947 building shows how the firm reoriented itself toward the new road and the postwar market.
