The Kuzuri Woolen Industry Men's Dormitory is a lodging block in Tamanoi, Kisogawa-cho, Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, built around 1952 and entered on the national list of Registered Tangible Cultural Property (buildings) on 17 August 2020. It is a two-storey timber structure with a hipped roof of clay pantiles and a floor area of 43 square metres, among the smallest of the nine buildings on the site.
It stands south-east of the mill, its long axis running north to south, with a later wing attached across the northern end. The walls are vertical boards under paint. The ground floor holds a store and an open passage where posts alone carry the upper floor, so people can walk straight through towards the weaving shed. Three rooms upstairs housed the men who lived on the premises.
The added wing dates from about 1957. It coincides with the side extensions to the mill and the building of the warehouse, which together mark a period when the workforce was growing.
Evidence of a Live-In Workforce
The registration criterion was contribution to the historic landscape. Nine buildings were listed on the same day: the mill, the office, the main house, the detached residence, the former bathhouse and toilets, the earthen storehouse, the raw yarn store and the warehouse, together with this one. The Kuzuri Woolen Industry Men's Dormitory carries registration number 23-0553.
The survival of a dormitory and a bathhouse is what makes this group unusual. Production plant on its own says nothing about how the people who ran it lived. Sleeping quarters, a bath and a lavatory beside the looms make a resident workforce legible rather than assumed.
No record of how many men occupied the three rooms could be found. The scale has to be read from the figures themselves: 43 square metres of footprint, three rooms on the upper floor.
The Open Ground Floor
The most telling decision here was not to wall in the ground level. Half became a store; the rest was left open between posts. Workers heading for the mill and trolleys carrying yarn and cloth pass beneath the building itself. On a tight site, circulation, storage and sleeping quarters were stacked rather than spread.
That passage is still in use today, along with the yarn store beside it. The labels have changed; the lines of movement have not.
Unlike the lapped boarding of the main house and the office, the walls of the Kuzuri Woolen Industry Men's Dormitory are boarded vertically. Layers of repainting have left a mixture of gloss and flaking that rewards a close look.
Visiting
The Kuzuri Woolen Industry Men's Dormitory stands inside a working factory yard and is not open on a walk-in basis. The official Aichi Prefecture tourism site notes that the company sometimes accepts visitors by prior arrangement. Telephone 0586-87-3323 at least two weeks ahead. Two or three visitors up to about ten are accepted, larger parties need discussion, and Saturdays and Sundays are non-working days. Checked on 31 August 2026.
No published photography policy could be found. The building is still used for storage, so ask when booking.
Tamanoi Station on the Meitetsu Bisai Line is about a two-minute walk. By car, allow about 15 minutes from the Ichinomiya-nishi exit of the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway or about 25 minutes from the Ichinomiya interchange of the Meishin Expressway. Because it sits south-east of the mill, the building is hard to see from outside the compound.
