Nagoya City Tozanso Main Gate and Wall (名古屋市東山荘正門及び塀, also written Tōzansō) is an early Showa-era gate and boundary wall in Hatsujimachi, Mizuho Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 21 June 2013. The gate is timber-framed under Kayabuki thatch with a frontage of 3.0 meters; the wall is timber with copper-plate roofing and runs 32 meters in total.

It stands at the southeast corner of the grounds. This is the first built thing a visitor meets, and the point where the street along the Yamazaki River gives way to the wooded interior of the villa. Pass through, and the view swaps buildings for trees.

Work on the main house began around 1912. The gate and wall came later, between 1926 and 1945, and the registration record makes that sequence plain: the residence went up first, the boundary was settled afterwards.

Why It Was Registered

Registration as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property rests on one criterion, that the structure contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes Nagoya City Tozanso Main Gate and Wall as a front gate built in a Sukiya-zukuri idiom, carrying both a rustic quality and a sense of standing.

That judgement comes down to the choice of materials. The roof is thatched over an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable frame, giving the gate more bulk than a street-facing entrance usually carries. The main posts and the supporting posts are round logs with their knots left in place, rather than the crisp squared timbers a formal gate would use. The Taruki rafters are round logs too, splayed outward like the ribs of a fan.

The wall turns away from the gate on both sides. Up to waist height it is packed with hishigi-dake, bamboo split and beaten flat, and above that a plastered panel is pierced by a long horizontal window. Bamboo below, plaster above, with the window cutting a single line through the upper band.

Recognition came in stages. The thatched gate and its copper-roofed wall were designated an Important Building for Urban Landscape by the City of Nagoya in 1991, more than two decades before the national registration. The street value was acknowledged first; the architectural registration followed.

What to Look For

Stop in front of Nagoya City Tozanso Main Gate and Wall and look up before walking through. The thatch is deep and its cut edge is trimmed level. Beneath it the round rafters fan outward, drawing the eye toward the point they radiate from. A gate with squared rafters set parallel gives a completely different impression from below.

Come close enough to touch a post and the swellings where branches once grew are still there. Leaving the log's own shape intact, instead of planing it into a clean column, is a sukiya habit.

Walk along the wall and the flattened bamboo continues at hand height. Each stem was split, beaten out and set in place, so the knots and the split lines fall differently on every piece. It never resolves into the evenness of a boarded fence. The horizontal window above sits a little higher than a passer-by's eyeline. It is not there to let people peer in; it lightens the mass of the wall.

The copper roofing has weathered to green. Brown thatch, amber bamboo and green copper all sit within one glance.

Through the gate, the main house appears beyond a screen of trees. Further in stands a second, smaller gate of 1.2 meters frontage dividing the front garden from the inner one. Comparing the two shows how deliberately the materials were graded, formal at the street and quieter within.

Visiting

Because Nagoya City Tozanso Main Gate and Wall stands outdoors, it can be seen freely during garden hours. The garden is open without charge from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The villa itself opens 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closes on Mondays, moving to the following non-holiday weekday when a Monday is a public holiday, and from 29 December to 3 January.

Photography at the gate is permitted, and the spot is used for pre-wedding portrait sessions. Pets may not be brought into the garden. Conditions can change, so confirm with the villa before a special trip.

Two routes reach the site. From Mizuho Kuyakusho Station on the Sakura-dori subway line, leave by exit 1 and walk 12 minutes east. By city bus, take route Kanayama 16 or Sakae 20 to Tanabe-dori 2-chome and walk 5 minutes west. The entrance to the grounds is on the east side. Parking is limited, and public transport is recommended.

The site is run by the Nagoya City Cultural Promotion Agency as designated manager, whose website posts any unscheduled closures.
