Nakamura Park at a Glance
Nakamura Park in Nakamura-cho, Nakamura Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, contains two buildings, the Memorial Hall of 1910 and the Hoshoken, an early Meiji tea house moved here, that were each registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017. They are owned by Nagoya City.
According to Nagoya City, the Memorial Hall was built by Aichi Prefecture to mark the 300th anniversary of the death of Kato Kiyomasa, and in the same year it served as a reception house when the Crown Prince, later Emperor Taisho, visited the park.
The Two Buildings
The Memorial Hall is a single-storey timber building on an L-shaped plan with a carriage porch under a cusped gable at the centre of the front (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It served as a wedding hall from 1954 to 1967 and later as a community hall, and was seismically strengthened in fiscal 2015 (Nagoya City).
The Hoshoken is a tea room favoured by Rokurokusai, eleventh head of the Omotesenke school, moved here in 1957 from Sobue-cho in Inazawa (Agency for Cultural Affairs). North of the park's gourd-shaped pond stand several tea rooms, including the Toin and the Hoshoken (Nakamura Park).
Use and Access
According to Nakamura Park, the Memorial Hall and the Toin tea room are paid park facilities used by advance booking; administrative and park use takes priority, so availability is checked by telephone. Photography sessions require a permit and fee. Facility charges were revised for use from October 1, 2026.
The nearest station is Nakamura Koen on the Higashiyama subway line (Nagoya City). The park office is at 68 Takabata, Nakamura-cho, Nakamura Ward, Nagoya (052-413-5525).
