Nyoiji Temple

Nyoiji Temple (如意寺) in Chikaraishicho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, keeps five buildings led by a main hall of about 1823, all registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on March 29, 2013 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The main hall takes the form of a seven-bay Shin Buddhist hall, and all five are owned by Nyoiji as a religious corporation.

The gate opens on the east side of the precinct, with the main hall directly in front of it (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The shoin stands north of the main hall, the drum tower north-west of the gate, and the bell tower towards the south of the precinct.

The Five Buildings

The main hall, of about 1823, has a hip-and-gable pantiled roof and a porch 3 bays wide (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The gate is a four-legged gate of the late Edo period, and the shoin, said to have served as a temporary hall while the main hall was built, also dates from the late Edo period and was extended in 1909.

The bell tower, of about 1755, stands on a stone base under a hip-and-gable roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The drum tower, from the end of the Edo period, carries a drum turret set crosswise on its roof. All five were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape.
