A Small Shrine Hall by the Pond

Tokuunji Temple Bentendo (徳雲寺弁天堂, Tokuun-ji Bentendō) is a small Buddhist hall of 1918 in the precinct of Tokuunji, a Jōdo-shū temple in Kira-cho Yoshida, Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 4 February 2021.

It stands east of the main hall on a raised base at the edge of a pond, facing south. It is a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of just 6.3 square meters, 1 bay across the front and 2 bays along the sides and back. An altar at the rear enshrines Benzaiten, the goddess of music, eloquence and water.

According to Nishio City, the hall was donated by Izumiya Gisaburō, a lay follower devoted to the temple's founder, the nun Satta Honshin.

Why It Was Registered

Tokuunji Temple Bentendo carries registration number 23-0559 and was registered in the same round as the main hall (23-0558), under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs and Nishio City use the same words for it: small, but with real refinement, and evidence of deep faith. The case rests on how much care went into so little space, a roof that changes shape from front to back and a facade given treatment the other walls did not get.

The main hall next door is deliberately plain, a hall for chanting with almost no ornament. The Bentendō is where the precinct allows itself detail.

What to Look For

A Roof With Two Faces

Tokuunji Temple Bentendo is entered from the gable end. Its roof is Irimoya-zukuri, hipped-and-gabled, at the front and a simple Kirizuma-zukuri gable at the back. The worshipper facing the hall sees the more formal shape; the plain finish is kept for the side nobody approaches.

Battens on the Front Only

The walls are clad in overlapping weatherboards, and only the front wall has sasarako, notched battens that hold the boards and give the surface a fine ribbed shadow. Compare the front with the sides and the difference is plain to see.

On the Water's Edge

The hall sits on a raised base at the edge of the pond. Benzaiten is a deity closely tied to water, and a pondside setting suits her. Stand to the south, facing the front, to see how hall and base are proportioned together.

Visiting

The exterior of Tokuunji Temple Bentendo can be seen from the temple precinct. The interior holds the altar of Benzaiten; no opening of it is announced, so contact the temple in advance if you hope to look inside. The hipped gable and the battened front are best seen from the south, with the pond at your side. Please refrain from photographs while a service is under way.
