Noshiro City Hall

Noshiro City Hall (能代市役所) in Kanmachi, Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, has two buildings, the first office building of 1949 and the city council chamber of 1950, registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on July 31, 2007 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency calls the office a fine example of a city hall of the postwar reconstruction years; the council chamber stands to its south. Both were registered as models of design.

The Two Buildings

The first building is a three-storey concrete block 51 metres long that shows its rigid frame plainly on the outside, under a hipped roof with a chimney at one side (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The council chamber is a two-storey timber hall 18 by 31 metres with a porch, a geometric front, close-set wide side windows and a queen-post truss roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A concrete office and a timber chamber side by side show together how a provincial city hall looked just after the war. Each building is described on its own page.
