The other way in
Saiya Sake Brewery Gate (斎彌酒造店門) is a wooden munamon gate of about 1902 in the Ishiwaki district of Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.
A munamon carries its ridge beam directly on two posts, with no secondary props behind them. That makes for a small structure, and this one measures just 3.3 metres across the front. The roof is sheet copper. Of the eleven registered structures on the plot, Saiya Sake Brewery Gate is the only one classed as a work of construction rather than a building.
Where it sits matters. The gate faces the road squarely, set between the main house with its shop and the document storehouse at the southeast corner. It was built to reach the Zashiki, the formal reception rooms of the house, without going through the shop. Customers buying sake and guests being received used different doors.
A merchant borrowing samurai manners
Saiya Sake Brewery Gate was registered on 2 September 1998, number 05-0033. It came in with the document storehouse in the twelfth round of registrations, which brought the total on this plot to eleven.
Small wicket doors flank the main opening on either side. That arrangement belongs to the gates of samurai residences, and finding it at a brewer's house says something precise about how status was expressed here. Ishiwaki had prospered as the Kameda domain's river port, and when merchant families rose to prominence in the Meiji era they reached for the older vocabulary to signal standing.
The registration criterion is contribution to the historic character of the landscape. Saiya Sake Brewery Gate is valued less as an object to study on its own than as a component that tightens the outline of the compound seen from the street. Line it up with the document storehouse, the main house and the covering shed at the southwest corner and the job it does becomes obvious.
Curves and straight lines
The shop entrance a few metres away is topped by a softly curved karahafu canopy. Saiya Sake Brewery Gate uses almost no curves at all: upright posts, a straight beam, a level ridge. Two entrances on the same street frontage, and the decorative logic of each is the reverse of the other.
Copper weathers to green over time, and the roof here has taken on that colour. Every storehouse behind it is roofed in clay tile, so the gate reads as a different material and therefore a different register. The choice of metal was itself a statement of rank.
Stand still and look past the posts. A flank of the main house comes into view. Saiya Sake Brewery Gate cannot be walked through, but it is one of the few points where the street is allowed a glimpse of the interior of the compound.
Visiting
Saiya Sake Brewery Gate opens onto the grounds of a working sake company, and passing through it is not possible. Brewery tours run by Saiya Shuzōten are suspended at present, so the gate is seen from the road. It faces the street head on, which makes the whole elevation easy to take in. Photography from the public road is fine; photographing inside the grounds needs the company's permission.
Across the street is Hakkōkōji Taya, run by the same company, open 10:00 to 17:00 and closed Thursdays and Sundays. Its gallery screens video of the brewery for visitors who apply beforehand. Pausing at Saiya Sake Brewery Gate and then crossing over works well.
From Ugo-Honjō Station on the JR Uetsu Main Line, cross the Koyoshi River and walk north about 1.5 kilometres, roughly 20 minutes. The city loop bus stops at Okeyachō nearby. Current details can be confirmed with Saiya Shuzōten on 0184-22-0536.
