Tohoku Bible Baptist Jumonji Church: The Only Surviving Vories Architecture in Akita

Standing quietly on a corner lot in the heart of Jumonji-cho, Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, the Tohoku Bible Baptist Jumonji Church is a modest yet historically significant Protestant chapel designed by the renowned Vories Architectural Office. Dedicated in 1949, this single-story wooden church is the sole remaining example of Vories architecture in Akita Prefecture and has been cherished as a local landmark for over seven decades. In November 2018, it was officially registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, recognizing its architectural and historical importance.

Historical Background

The roots of the Jumonji Church extend back to February 1935, when American missionaries Craig and Cochran began evangelical work in the Jumonji area—more than a decade before the church building itself was completed. After years of dedicated outreach through the difficult wartime period, the congregation finally saw the dedication of their church hall in June 1949.

The church belongs to the Conservative Baptist Association of Japan and has served the local community not only as a place of worship but also through its affiliated kindergarten, Kohitsuji (Little Lamb) Certified Children's Center, which has long been a beloved institution in the town.

The Architect: William Merrell Vories

The church was designed by the Vories Architectural Office, founded by William Merrell Vories (1880–1964), an American-born architect, missionary, and entrepreneur who became one of the most prolific Western architects working in Japan. Vories came to Japan in 1905 as an English teacher and YMCA missionary, eventually establishing his architectural practice in Omi-Hachiman, Shiga Prefecture. Over his career, his firm designed more than 1,600 buildings across Japan and Southeast Asia, including the iconic Daimaru Department Store on Shinsaibashi in Osaka and the Hilltop Hotel (Yamano Ue Hotel) in Tokyo.

Vories's design philosophy centered on the belief that a building's true character lies not in its outward appearance but in its inner qualities—prioritizing comfort, practicality, and harmony with Japanese climate and customs. This human-centered approach earned his works lasting admiration, and today more than sixty Vories buildings are registered as cultural properties across Japan.

Why It Was Designated a Cultural Property

The Tohoku Bible Baptist Jumonji Church was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 2, 2018. The designation recognizes several noteworthy features of the building. Situated on a corner lot facing east and south onto streets, the church presents a dignified gable-roofed façade with a distinctive bell tower rising from the front ridge. The front elevation is finished in smooth mortar, giving the building a clean Western appearance. Inside, the worship hall achieves a remarkably open, column-free space—a hallmark of thoughtful structural design that creates a unified and serene environment for prayer and congregation. As the only surviving Vories-designed building in Akita Prefecture, the church holds particular regional significance as both an architectural heritage and a testament to the cross-cultural exchanges that shaped modern Japan.

Architectural Highlights and Attractions

Despite its modest scale, the Jumonji Church embodies several characteristic elements of Vories design. The building is a single-story wooden structure with a large gable roof in the tsuma-iri (gable-entry) style, covered with metal sheet roofing and encompassing a floor area of approximately 175 square meters. The bell tower positioned atop the front gable serves as both a spiritual symbol and a visual landmark visible from the surrounding streets.

The mortar-finished front wall gives the church a Western ecclesiastical character while the overall construction uses traditional Japanese wooden framing—a blend that is quintessentially Vories. The interior is especially noteworthy: by eliminating interior columns, the architect created a spacious and unified worship area that feels far larger than the building's footprint would suggest, bathed in gentle natural light.

The church has been lovingly maintained by its congregation for over 75 years, preserving the warmth and intimacy that Vories sought to imbue in every building he designed.

Visiting the Church

The Tohoku Bible Baptist Jumonji Church is an active place of worship, and visitors are welcome to attend Sunday services and other gatherings. The main Sunday worship service is held at 10:30 AM. A Bible study and prayer meeting takes place on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM. As the church is primarily a religious facility rather than a museum, visitors wishing to view the architecture outside of service times are encouraged to contact the church office in advance.

The church is located in the central area of Jumonji-cho, easily accessible from JR Jumonji Station on the Ou Main Line. The town of Jumonji is known as a transportation crossroads in the Yokote region of southern Akita.
