A gate, a storehouse and a house in Torami

The Former Akiba Family Residence (旧秋場家住宅, Kyū Akiba-ke Jūtaku) is an old family estate in Torami, Ichinomiya, Chiba Prefecture, whose storehouse of 1842, early Meiji-period nagayamon gatehouse and main house of 1900 were registered together as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan on June 28, 2017. The estate stands just by Torami Station on the JR Sotobō Line, on the west side of National Route 128.

According to Ichinomiya Town, the Akiba family once served as amimoto, the owners of the big fishing nets, and from the last years of the Edo period also ran a sake brewery. Town records describe beach-seine fishing for sardines as a major livelihood along Kujūkuri Beach in the Edo period, and the shore at Torami is part of that same long beach.

The three buildings went up over roughly 60 years. The storehouse is the oldest, dated to 1842 by its Munafuda, the wooden ridge tag recording construction. No such tag survives for the gate, and tool marks on its timbers place it in the early Meiji period, roughly 1868 to 1882. The main house carries a ridge tag dated 1900.

From the gate to the main house

The Nagayamon, a long gatehouse with rooms on either side of the passage, closes off the south edge of the estate. It runs 9 bays along its length, with the gateway opening at the centre. The hipped roof is thatched, though for now the thatch sits under a temporary covering of sheet metal.

East of the gate stands the storehouse, which faces north, so its front looks into the estate rather than out to the street. The main house lies beyond the gate: a hipped-roof dwelling with pantile roofing, lean-to aisles on all four sides and a projecting entrance under its own hipped roof.

Seen together, the gate, the storehouse and the house show how a family that combined net ownership with brewing laid out its home. On a visit to the Former Akiba Family Residence, start with the gate on the south side, which is the public face of the estate, then work out where the storehouse and the house sit behind it.

The three registered buildings

  • Main house (registration no. 12-0228): built 1900; timber, single storey with a partial 2-storey section; building area 235 square metres
  • Storehouse (registration no. 12-0229): built 1842; earthen-walled, 2 storeys; building area 45 square metres
  • Nagayamon gate (registration no. 12-0230): early Meiji period; timber, single storey; building area 66 square metres

The main house and the gate were registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country, and the storehouse as a model of its type. All three belong to 有限会社亜巳絵, a private limited company, and were registered on the same day, alongside two other properties in Ichinomiya: the Takahara Family Residence shop storehouse and buildings of the Former Saitō Family Residence.

Restoration in 2013 and later use

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a renovation of all three buildings in 2013. A local plan for reusing Ichinomiya's historic buildings refers to the restored estate as Yuan (柚庵), and the town's heritage pages describe the main house as a rental space and the storehouse as a gallery.

As of October 2026, however, no operator's page for the venue could be found, and it is unclear what is currently running there. Check the latest situation, for example with the town's cultural properties office, before making the trip.

Visiting and getting there

The Former Akiba Family Residence is managed by its corporate owner and is not a heritage site that opens on a regular schedule. The interiors are accessible only when the buildings are in use for events or hire. The grounds are private property, so do not walk in uninvited even to look at the exterior. There is no published policy on photography; if you are inside for an event, ask the staff before taking pictures.

The nearest station is Torami on the JR Sotobō Line, about 1 minute on foot according to Ichinomiya Town. Torami is the first stop south of Kazusa-Ichinomiya Station on the same line. The estate sits on the west side of National Route 128.
