A Tiled Yakuimon Gate at the Front of a Farm Estate

The Ishibashi Family Residence Gate (石橋家住宅門, Ishibashi-ke Jūtaku Mon) is the Meiji-period (1868–1911) front gate of the Ishibashi Family Residence in Kuizaki, Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (registration number 12-0016) on July 8, 1999. It is a tall wooden Yakuimon under a heavy roof of round and flat tiles (Hongawarabuki), covering a building area of 5.0 square meters.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the Ishibashi gate the front entrance of one of the leading farm estates in the town. It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and much of that value lies in the way it faces the road with a storehouse on either side.

Reading the Roof of the Ishibashi Family Residence Gate

Stand in front of the Ishibashi Family Residence Gate and look up first. The footprint is tiny, about 5.0 square meters, but the thick tiled roof and the tall posts make the gate read much larger from the road.

Decorative end tiles (Onigawara) cap the main ridge and the descending ridges, and the national database also points to the corner cover tiles, called tomebuta-gawara. Narita City notes ornamental tiles at all four corners of the roof.

Then follow the eaves. The round end tiles that close each row, abumi-gawara, carry the characters 石 (ishi, stone) and 橋 (hashi, bridge), so the family name is spelled out one character per tile along the roof edge. The Agency for Cultural Affairs reads these tiles as a sign of the family's standing.

According to Narita City, each leaf of the main doors is a single piece of keyaki, Japanese zelkova.

The Ishibashi Gate and Its Flanking Storehouses

The Ishibashi Family Residence Gate was never meant to stand alone. A side door opens between it and the South Storehouse, and a short flanking wall (Sodobei) ties it to the East Storehouse. The big doors could stay shut while people came and went through the side door.

Both storehouses are Meiji buildings like the gate, and together the three form the estate's face to the road. Seen that way, a gate this narrow carries all the weight a farm estate's entrance needed.

Visiting the Ishibashi Family Residence Gate

The Ishibashi Family Residence Gate belongs to a private home that Narita City lists as closed to the public. You cannot pass through it, but because it faces the road, its exterior can be seen from the public street.

From the far side of the road, the gate's height and the storehouses on either side fit into a single view. The 石 and 橋 tiles are small and sit high on the eaves, so look for them without lingering at the doors, and keep photographs to what the street shows.
