The Gate to the Front Garden

The Mogi Shichiroemon Family Residence Inner Gate (茂木七郎右衛門家住宅内門, Uchimon) in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, is a late-Meiji timber gate with flanking board fences that closes off the front garden of the main house on a soy sauce brewing family's estate; it was moved to its present position in 1971 and entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 27 March 2018. The opening is 2.1 metres wide, under a copper-sheet roof.

It stands southeast of the main house entrance and faces south. Board fences turn at right angles from each side, separating the front garden from the rest of the property. If the main gate on the perimeter is where visitors arrive, the Mogi Shichiroemon Family Residence Inner Gate is the second threshold, the one that admits them to the house itself.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to late Meiji, giving a range of 1898 to 1912. It was moved here in 1971.

A Plain Bracket-Arm Gate

This is an udegimon, a gate whose roof is carried on arms (udegi) passing through the main posts and projecting front and back. Here the arms pass through both the main posts and the ridge struts, with a supporting beam beneath each arm. The doors are paired wooden leaves, and the eaves use a single tier of widely spaced Taruki rafters.

The main gate is a sturdy Yakuimon, which Chiba Prefecture describes as solid and steady in character. The inner gate is lighter and slimmer, and the Agency calls its design simple and clear. A heavy gate facing outward and a light one inside: the difference in weight tells you which gate faces the world.

The Board Fences

The attached fences are of vertical boards, and in the upper band the boards are spaced apart, leaving narrow gaps. They screen the garden without sealing it off completely.

The phrase 'with fences' in the registration means these are listed together with the gate. The registration number is 12-262, and it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.

Visiting

The gate closes off the front garden of a private home and cannot be visited. Whether it is visible from outside the property has not been confirmed. Kotohira Shrine next door opens on the 10th of every month, but the gate is not part of that visit.
