The Nakamura Family Residence Gate and Stone Wall (中村家住宅門及び石塀, Nakamura-ke jūtaku mon oyobi ishibei) is the stone gateway and boundary wall that closes the north side of the Nakamura estate along the Chiba Kaido in Onikoshi, Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture; built in the late Meiji era and altered in the early Showa years, it was registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 7 October 2014. It counts as a single structure made up of two gates, the main gate and the carriage gate, and a stone wall with a wicket door.
The main gate stands toward the west and leads to the entrance of the main house. The carriage gate stands toward the east, beside the office. Each opening is 3.5 metres wide. Between and beyond them the wall runs on, turning corners, for a total length of 29 metres.
Both pairs of gateposts are granite with Edokiri dressing. The wall is laid in Boshu stone in level courses, Nunozumi, and a wicket door, Kugurido, hangs beside the main gate.
Why It Was Registered
The Nakamura Family Residence Gate and Stone Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs writes that the tall, heavy stone wall lends dignity to the frontage of an old family house. The face the estate presents to the highway is made first of all by this gate and wall.
Pay attention to how the stone is divided up. The gateposts use hard granite, dressed with sharp arrises. The body of the wall uses Boshu stone, quarried in the south of the Boso Peninsula, a stone easy to work and widely used for walls and retaining walls around the Kanto region. The posts that carry load get one stone, the long run of wall another.
The names of the gates say something about the household too. The main gate leads to the main house, the family's home, while the carriage gate opens beside the office. Separate entrances for the house and for the business suit a family that ran a miso brewery here.
What to Look For
Compare the tops and corners of the two sets of gateposts first. Edokiri dressing chamfers the edges of the stone narrowly and leaves the centre of each face slightly proud, so the corner lines stand out crisply against the speckled granite.
The wall is laid in level courses, so the joints run in unbroken horizontals. Walk its 29 metres and at each corner the joint lines swing round, tracing the outline of the property.
Look also for the wicket door beside the main gate. It lets people pass while the big leaves stay shut, and hints at a household that kept everyday comings and goings apart from the reception of guests.
Visiting
The Nakamura Family Residence Gate and Stone Wall belongs to a private home, and you cannot go through the gates. Ichikawa City's and Chiba Prefecture's heritage pages give no visiting days or booking procedure (checked 25 September 2026).
On the other hand, it is the registered structure on the estate that is easiest to see in full. Because it runs along the north side facing the Chiba Kaido, both gates and the whole wall are visible from the public road. The house is lived in, so avoid peering through the gateways with a camera and stand where you will not block people on the pavement.
