A Late Edo Shop in Central Kisarazu

The Yamani Tsunashima Shoten Store (ヤマニ綱島商店店舗) is a late Edo-period shop building in Chuo 2-chome, Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture, altered in the late Taisho era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on July 25, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber building, single-storey with a partial upper floor, tiled roof, building area 100 square metres; registration number 12-0153.

Two Storehouse Blocks, One Behind the Other

The Yamani Tsunashima Shoten Store faces west onto the street (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It consists of two plastered, fire-resistant (ōkabe-zukuri) blocks with gabled pantile roofs set one behind the other, with lean-to roofs added along the front and the south side and a copper-roofed canopy running across the front.

The front block, the misegura, is the shop; the middle block behind it, the nakamisegura, serves as the workshop (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Yamani Tsunashima Shoten Store was registered for its contribution to the historic townscape. The Agency singles out its unusual profile, with storehouse-style blocks of different ridge heights lined up front to back.

What to Look For

The street front stands open as a shop, while the side is finished in white plaster like a storehouse (Agency for Cultural Affairs). From the street, compare the open shopfront with the plastered side wall.

Step back a little and the two ridges sit at different heights, the rear block rising behind the front one. That stepped overlap is the profile the Agency describes.
