A Meiji Schoolhouse in Unomachi
The Former Kaimei School Building (旧開明学校校舎, Kyū Kaimei gakkō kōsha) is a two-storey wooden primary school built in 1882 in Unomachi, Uwa-cho, Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on May 29, 1997. One wooden building plaque is designated with it.
According to the Ehime Prefectural Board of Education, Kaimei School opened in 1872. The surviving building went up in 1882 under the master carpenter Tsuzuki Kumakichi of the former town of Misaki, now part of Ikata. Today it is open as the Kaimei School education museum, and Seiyo City owns it.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a wooden, two-storey building with a building area of 169.4 square metres, a front veranda corridor and an entrance porch, under a Yosemune-zukuri hipped roof of pantiles. It was designated for its high historical value.
Why It Matters
The Former Kaimei School Building was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1997. Ehime Prefecture regards it as a leading example of an unusual kind of pseudo-Western architecture, in which local carpenters added only a light touch of Western design, such as arched windows, to the exterior. The restraint is what gives this school its character: a Japanese timber building with just a few Western notes.
The prefecture adds that its simple construction reflects the years just before Japan's national primary-school system was fully organised, making it valuable for the history of school buildings and for understanding how architecture modernised in the regions.
It also matters that both the builder and the date are known. One building plaque is designated together with the schoolhouse.
What to Look For
Outside, look at the arched windows set into the white walls. As the prefecture puts it, the Western touches are slight: the hipped tile roof and the timber frame are a Japanese carpenter's work, and it is the window shapes that give the Western impression. The front veranda corridor and entrance porch are also named in the national record.
According to the Seiyo City Tourism and Products Association, the interior is an education museum showing textbooks and other materials, chiefly from the Meiji era, with about 6,000 items in all. Visitors can also join a Meiji-style lesson in arithmetic, reading and writing, and singing, taught with the wall charts used as textbooks at the time. Since 1987 Kaimei School has been a sister museum of the Former Kaichi School in Matsumoto, Nagano, another Important Cultural Property.
The school stands within the Unomachi streetscape, a selected Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Across the street is the Uwa Folk Museum, which shares the same admission ticket.
Visiting the Former Kaimei School Building
The Former Kaimei School Building is open as an education museum. According to the Seiyo City Tourism and Products Association, it opens 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last entry 4:30 p.m.) and closes on Mondays (the following day if Monday is a public holiday) and over the New Year (December 29 to January 3). Admission, shared with the Uwa Folk Museum, is 700 yen for adults, 420 yen for university and high school students, and free for junior high school students and younger.
The Meiji lesson costs 500 yen per person and must be booked by phone or fax at least a week ahead; a guided walk of the streetscape (3,000 yen per guide, up to 15 people) is also by reservation.
