A Boundary Drawn Inside the Walls

The Kubo Family Residence Partition Gate and Wall (久保家住宅仕切門及び塀, Kuboke Jūtaku Shikirimon oyobi Hei) is a small copper-roofed gate with its attached plastered walls at 919-1 Dōgo Yunomachi in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, built around 1906 within a physician's estate and entered on the national list of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 27 February 2023.

It divides the north garden in two. West of it lies the entrance side, where patients and tradespeople arrived. East of it lies the Zashiki side, the reception rooms of the main house and the garden they look onto. The gate opening is 1.8 metres wide and the Agency for Cultural Affairs records the attached wall at 7.8 metres in total.

The date follows the rest of the estate. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives around 1906; Matsuyama City estimates about 1899, the year Kubo Hikoji opened his clinic, and notes that no ridge tablet or inscription survives to settle it.

Why the Gate and Wall Are on the National Register

The register created in 1996 covers buildings that remain part of everyday life rather than monuments taken out of use. The Kubo Family Residence Partition Gate and Wall was accepted under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country and carries registration number 38-0170. It joined the main house, the detached wing, the waiting arbor and the front gate on 27 February 2023.

Of the five, this is the one nobody sees. It faces no road. It has no function beyond regulating movement between two parts of a private garden, and if the estate had been redeveloped it would have been the first thing removed. That it survives is what makes the group legible as a group. A doctor's household needed one route for the clinic and another for guests, and the fabric that separated them is still standing.

What to Look For

The roof is a Kirizuma-zukuri gable, but it is finished in copper sheet laid in single straight courses rather than in the pantiles used on every other roof of the estate. Copper is quieter, thinner and more expensive per square metre than tile. Spending it on an internal gate, where no visitor from the street would ever notice, is a decision worth pausing over.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the gate as an udegimon, the bracket-carried type, with widely spaced Taruki rafters and doors hung as Mairado, the sliding leaf faced with closely set horizontal battens. Matsuyama City instead calls it a kidomon, a simple plank-door gate. The two descriptions differ on the type name and agree on everything else, which is worth knowing if you compare the sources.

Short walls run north and south from the gate. Matsuyama City measures the northern one at 2.83 metres, where it meets the eastern length of the front gate's wall, and the southern one at 3.12 metres, where it joins the passage room of the main house. Both are Shinkabe construction finished in grey lime plaster. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives the registered total as 7.8 metres.

The detail that repays attention is the finish. The plasterwork here was matched to the rear face of the street wall so that the two read as one continuous surface. Standing in the entrance garden, a visitor would have seen a single enclosure rather than an outer boundary and an inner one.

Visiting

The Kubo Family Residence Partition Gate and Wall cannot be seen from any public place. It stands entirely inside a private walled garden, the estate has no public opening, and there is no admission charge, no viewing arrangement and no interior tour. This page exists so that the structure can be understood, not visited.

What you can do on the ground is read its position. From the approach road to Isaniwa Shrine, the front gate stands toward the west of the estate frontage and the eastern length of its wall runs on from there. The partition gate meets that wall from the inside, roughly a third of the way along. Behind the plaster at that point, the garden changes from the entrance side to the reception side.

Take the Iyotetsu city tram to the Dōgo Onsen terminus, walk through the Haikara-dōri arcade to the bathhouse and turn east onto the shrine approach, about eight minutes on foot.
