A Zen-Style Hall of 1431 on Iwagi Island

The Shounji Temple Kannon Hall (祥雲寺観音堂, Shōunji kannondō) is a Buddhist hall at Shounji on Iwagi Island, Kamijima Town, Ochi District, Ehime Prefecture; a copy of its ridge tablet dates it to 1431, in the mid-Muromachi period, and it was designated an Important Cultural Property on November 6, 1941. Three ridge tablets are designated with it.

According to the Ehime Prefectural Board of Education, the hall stands in the Mitsuya district of Iwagi, one of the Geiyo Islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as 3 ken by 3 ken, single storey, with an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof of hongawara tile. It belongs to Shounji.

Why It Matters

The Shounji Temple Kannon Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1941. Ehime Prefecture describes it as a charming small tile-roofed hall in the Muromachi Zenshūyō Zen style with some Wayō Japanese-style elements. The round posts stand on plinth stones, the bracketing is sparsely spaced, the eaves have fan-pattern rafters and the interior has a flat mirror ceiling.

Inside stands a Chinese-style altar dais whose railing posts and struts carry a double-lotus motif, a rare treatment (Ehime Prefectural Board of Education).

According to the prefecture, the hall was dismantled and repaired in 1956 and restored to its Muromachi form, and in 1976 the three ridge tablets were added to the designation.

What to Look For

Outside, look at the rafters under the eaves. Radiating like the ribs of a folding fan, these fan rafters are a defining Zen-style feature. At the base of each round post, a plinth stone shows the same Zen-style approach.

The prefecture notes that five dragons were once painted in rich colours on the mirror ceiling, though only faint traces remain. Small as it is, the hall is consistent in its Muromachi Zen-style detailing.
