A Small Gate Opening Toward the Garden
Between the front gate and the entrance of the main house at the Yamakawa residence in Obama, Fukui Prefecture, a second, smaller gate stands to the west of the path, opening toward the north garden of the house. This is the middle gate, or chumon: a single-bay bracket gate, an ikken udemon, with a frontage of just 1.5 metres. Square posts carry the structure, steadied by stone posts set as braces. A lintel ties the frame, and above it a diagonal brace is thrown across. The gable roof is covered with wall tiles, and round tiles cap the ridge.
The official record describes it plainly as a small, simple gate standing at the entrance to the garden. Its modesty is the point: this is not the face the household showed the town, but an inner threshold, a quiet turn in the path.
The Smallest of Five Registered Structures
The middle gate was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2008, together with the four other buildings of the residence, under the standard for structures contributing to the historic landscape. Registration is Japan's lighter conservation category, below the designation reserved for Important Cultural Properties. Of the five registered structures on the site, this gate is the smallest, and its value lies less in scale than in the role it plays.
Set where the approach to the main house meets the garden, the middle gate marks a change of register within the compound. Passing the front gate brings a visitor into the residence; passing the middle gate turns them toward the more private world of the garden. The stone braces at its posts, the tiled gable, the round tiles along the ridge: these are small, careful touches on a structure that could easily have been merely functional. It belongs to the sequence of thresholds by which a residence like this organised movement and privacy.
A Turn Into a Quiet Inner World
The garden the gate opens onto is a compact inner court, laid out when the present buildings went up in 1907, with stepping stones and stone lanterns in the manner of a garden seen from a tea room. This was the setting of daily life for the Yamakawa, former senior retainers of the Obama domain turned bankers, and the childhood home of the poet Yamakawa Tomiko (1879–1909), who worked within the Myojo circle beside Yosano Akiko.
To pass through the middle gate is to move from the formal front of the house toward the rooms and garden where a life was actually lived. The whole residence opened as the Yamakawa Tomiko Memorial Museum in 2007. One practical note before visiting: the museum is temporarily closed from April 2026, with reopening planned for around July, while pest treatment and repairs are carried out.
