A Small Stone-Crowned Gate on the Street
Restaurant Tenguro Front Gate (料亭天狗楼表門, Ryōtei Tengurō Omotemon) is a timber Munamon gate in Nakakojicho, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, built around 1951 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 November 2015. It is 1.9 metres wide, under a gabled roof of pantiles, and serves as the restaurant's main entrance from the street.
A munamon is a gate carried on two posts with a small roof of its own, the simplest of the roofed gate types. Restaurant Tenguro Front Gate stands on the road to the east of the Ryotei Building, set into the board fence that runs south from the Kitchen Building, and it carries a plaque with the name Tenguro.
Nothing records its construction directly. Sabae City, judging from the weathering of its timbers, believes it was made when Tenguro opened in 1951, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs also dates it to around that year.
Shaping the Street and the Approach
It was registered as number 18-0142 for its contribution to the historic landscape. Of the four registered buildings, only the gate and the Kitchen Building meet the street directly.
The board fence on either side has been repaired in recent years, but its small roof, like the gate's, uses tiles of Shakudani stone, a tuff quarried in Fukui. Sabae City describes gate, fence, kitchen front and the trees of the forecourt as combining into a fine streetscape.
The Agency also points to how the gate handles arrival. Restaurant Tenguro Front Gate is set slightly off the axis of the Ryotei Building's entrance. Instead of the door appearing straight ahead as you step through, the approach bends a little, and the Agency sees in this a deliberate variation in the way guests are brought in.
Reading the Details
The ridge stone and the onigawara end ornaments are not ceramic but carved from Shakudani stone, so the ridge is capped at both ends with stone.
Above the tie beam sits an Osa-ranma, a transom filled with fine, closely set vertical bars like the reed of a loom. The rafters are slender too. For a gate only 1.9 metres wide, the result is a refined piece of design, and the Agency describes it as elegant.
The paving underfoot is Shakudani stone as well. From ridge to threshold, the same material runs through the whole gate.

Restaurant Tenguro Front Gate faces the road, and its exterior can be seen from the street. Of the four buildings, it is the one you can stand closest to.
The ground beyond the gate is private, so please do not enter without permission. No guidance on photography was found; if photographing from the road, choose a spot that keeps clear of people and vehicles coming in and out.
The fine bars of the transom and the stone ridge ends are easiest to take in from across the road, square on to the gate. The name plaque can be read from there as well.
