About the Jofukuji Temple Main Hall
The Jofukuji Temple Main Hall (浄福寺本堂, Jōfuku-ji Hondō) is the worship hall of a Jodo Shinshu temple in Kobo, Okawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture, a single-storey timber building rebuilt in 1834 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2023.
The Jofukuji Temple Main Hall stands behind the main gate under a hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri roof of Hongawarabuki tiles, entered on the long side. A veranda runs along the front, and a Kōhai porch projects from the centre. With a building area of 161 m², its roof towers over the rows of townhouses along the street.
Okawa City notes that the rebuilding date comes from the Munafuda ridge tag and the dates written on the Onigawara end tiles. In 2004 the exterior was heavily repaired: the roof was re-tiled and parts of the veranda were replaced.
Why Jofukuji's Main Hall Was Registered
The Jofukuji Temple Main Hall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a typical main hall of the Shin school of Pure Land Buddhism that helps shape the historic streetscape of Enokizu, a district known for its woodworking.
What Okawa City values most is that the carving around the porch and the interior still look much as they did after the 1834 rebuilding, even though the outside has been renewed. In other words, the roof and veranda are recent, but the carving and the layout inside, the parts most worth seeing, are close to two centuries old.
What to Look for at Jofukuji Main Hall
Carving around the porch
At Jofukuji the porch is the first thing to draw the eye. The Agency notes rich carving around the porch and in the Ranma transoms dividing the inner and outer sanctuaries. Compare it with the main gate, which carries almost no ornament, and the amount of carved work on the front of the hall becomes obvious.
A Shin Buddhist interior
Inside, the Jofukuji Temple Main Hall follows the standard Shin plan. Worshippers sit in the large Gejin outer hall. At its far end a section called the yaraiuchi is marked off by a low railing, and beyond it lies the Naijin inner sanctuary with the principal image, flanked on either side by side chambers known as yoma.
Shin temples give most of their floor to the outer hall so that large congregations can gather for sermons, and Jofukuji has kept that arrangement intact.
Visiting the Jofukuji Temple Main Hall
The outside of the Jofukuji Temple Main Hall can be seen from in front of the gate and from the precinct. The porch is visible through the gate, but to see the carving properly, walk up to the front of the hall.
The interior is not normally open. Guided tours run by the Kobo-Enokizu preservation society include the inside of the hall on some dates, and requests to see it are handled through the tours. Directions to the temple and tour booking details are on the Jofukuji Temple (Okawa) page.
No official guidance on photography could be found (checked September 2026). The hall is used for services, so check with your guide before taking pictures inside.
