The Shop and Main House
The Kanhokuto Sake Brewery Store and Main House (寒北斗酒造店舗兼主屋) is the combined shop and residence of a sake brewery of the late Edo period in Okumamachi, Kama City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 4, 2015 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a late Edo-period date, a two-storey timber structure with a tiled roof and a building area of 404 square metres; registration number 40-0134.
Of the three registered buildings at Kanhokuto Sake Brewery (寒北斗酒造, Kanhokuto Shuzō), this is the one on the street. Shop and family home share a single roof: the front of the house did business on the Akizuki highway, the rest of it was where the brewing family lived and received guests.
A Gable Sealed in Grey Plaster
The Kanhokuto Sake Brewery Store and Main House is roofed in hip-and-gable form and turns its gable end to the highway, the arrangement known as Tsumairi. Its outer walls are sealed in nezumi shikkui, a mouse-grey lime plaster, and the Agency describes the result as weighty and imposing.
Grey plaster reads quieter than the usual white Shikkui. Where many townhouses show off their posts and wooden lattices, this one is plastered over, which gives it something of the solidity of a storehouse.
It is a two-storey building with a footprint of 404 square metres, the public face of the brewery on the road. The big gable is easiest to take in from a few steps back across the street.
Why It Was Registered
The Kanhokuto Sake Brewery Store and Main House was registered in 2015 as a building that contributes to the historic landscape. The Agency points to its well-developed plan and its fine guest rooms, and values it as a late Edo brewery building.
Shop, office and living quarters are joined here by proper reception rooms, pushed out from the house to frame a courtyard. The plan shows how much standing a brewing family on the highway expected its home to carry by the end of the Edo period. The Ansei Storehouse behind it is firmly dated to 1857, which helps place the house in the same years.
Earth Floor, Office Rooms and a Courtyard
Inside, according to the Agency, the left side of the Kanhokuto Shop and Main House is a broad earth-floored Doma, while the right side holds a row of rooms including the office and a middle room. Corner reception rooms project from the front and back of the right flank, so that the plan closes around a courtyard.
The division is clear: the doma took the traffic of a working brewery, and the rooms to the right handled trade and family life. The two projecting corner rooms, together with the body of the house, wrap the courtyard garden.
From the street you see only a plastered gable. Behind it is a sequence of guest rooms looking onto a garden, and the gap between that heavy front and the more refined rooms at the back is what makes the house worth understanding.
Seeing the Building
The Kanhokuto Shop and Main House is part of a working brewery, and no open days for the interior are announced. Because it fronts the Akizuki Kaido, the gable and the grey walls can be seen from the road.
The courtyard and corner rooms that define the plan are inside and not on view. No official guidance on photography was found, so check with the brewery before stepping onto the premises.
