An Open Worship Hall Hung with Shitomi Shutters
Sasayama Shrine Worship Hall (篠山神社拝殿, Sasayama-jinja Haiden) is a south-facing hall of worship built in 1879 on the site of the main enclosure of Kurume Castle in Sasayama-machi, Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 31, 2022. It stands about 40 meters south of the main hall and fills the front of the grounds as the building where visitors come to pray. It was renovated in 1930.
The Sasayama Shrine Worship Hall measures five bays across its front (Ketayuki) by three bays deep (Harima). Its hip-and-gable irimoya roof has the entrance on the long side (Hirairi) and is sheathed in copper sheet (dōban-buki). The single-storey timber building covers 87 square meters, exactly twice the area of the main hall. It rests on a platform of cut stone laid in two courses, and a broad kōhai porch three bays wide projects from the front.
Why the Sasayama Shrine Worship Hall Was Registered
The Sasayama Shrine Worship Hall is entry 40-0201 in the register and was listed as a model of form. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points out that every bay except the front and rear entrances is fitted with shitomi shutters, and describes the result as a large and open worship hall.
Here is how the openings are divided. The center of the front has Sankarado paneled doors, the rear has doors that slide apart to either side, and all the remaining bays hold Shitomido, hinged panels that swing upward and are hooked open. With the shutters raised, three sides of the five-by-three-bay interior are almost completely open. Lowered, they read as a wall of boards; raised, only the posts remain. It is a building designed to change its face.
A Kirime-en veranda runs around all four sides, edged with a hanekōran, a railing (kōran) whose ends flick upward and outward. On the long front of a side-entry hall, those lifted rail ends add a light touch of movement.
What to Look For at the Worship Hall
Standing before the Sasayama Shrine Worship Hall, look down first at the platform. Two courses of dressed stone lift the whole building slightly above the ground. The three-bay porch spans the central three of the five front bays.
Then step a little to the east or west and look along the side. The shitomi continue bay after bay down the flank, with the veranda and its railing running in a straight line beneath them. Whether the shutters are up or down makes a large difference to how the building looks.
Inside, the ceiling is an oriage gō-tenjō: a coffered grid raised on a curved cove around its edges. The Agency's photographic record includes a view of the interior taken from the southeast. At the shrine's spring and autumn grand festivals, thick matcha is offered to the deities in this hall.
Visiting the Sasayama Shrine Worship Hall
On an ordinary visit you pray at the front of the Sasayama Shrine Worship Hall and view the building from the grounds. The interior is entered only when you go up for a prayer ceremony. The shrine accepts reservations for prayers, which can be arranged through the shrine office.
To take in the whole building, step back a little from the front on the south side. The worship hall's roof, the roof of the middle gate behind it and the great roof of the main hall beyond stack up one behind the other. There is no specific guidance on photographing the worship hall; during rites and prayers, keep out of the way of those taking part. How to reach the grounds and the general visiting conditions are covered on the Sasayama Shrine page.
