What the Former Kai Family Residence Front Gate is

The Former Kai Family Residence Front Gate (旧甲斐家住宅表門, Kyū Kai-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is a late Taishō (1919 to 1926) wooden gate on the Atsushio Kaidō road in Aza Itchome, Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2021.

It is the main gate of the Kai brewing family's estate on the old road along the west bank of the Tazuke River. The opening is 2.6 meters wide, with a wing wall on each side. The gate stands slightly back from the road, its ridge lined up with the shop storehouse next door to the north.

The shop storehouse was where customers came to buy; the Former Kai Family Residence Front Gate was the formal entrance for guests of the house, and the two stand side by side on the street.

Why it was registered

It was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that with the weighty shop storehouse it forms a historic streetscape.

It is a Yakuimon, a gate type with its roof carried forward of the main posts, here with a gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) of round-and-flat tiles (Hongawarabuki) and stout timbers. Each door leaf is a single board of Keyaki zelkova. Tiled wing walls (Sodobei) on both sides each hold a small wicket door (Kugurido), so people could come and go with the main doors shut.

What to look for

Look first at the doors. A single seamless keyaki board this wide needs a very large tree, and on the Former Kai Family Residence Front Gate it is a plain display of the owner's means.

Then cross the road and step back. The ridge of the gate is set at the same line as the shop storehouse, so the two read as one continuous front rather than a gate trying to stand out on its own.

Visiting the Former Kai Family Residence Front Gate

The Former Kai Family Residence Front Gate faces the Atsushio Kaidō and can be seen from the road during the closure. It faces east; the agency's registration photo takes it at an angle from the southeast. Scaffolding or sheeting may cover parts of it at some stages of the work.

The estate has been closed since April 2023 for conservation work, so the gate cannot be passed. Interiors can be seen only at the special openings held about once a year, with the next planned for March 2027. Directions and the repair schedule are on the Former Kai Family Residence page.
