A Merchant House Facing the Old Road
Gyokusendo Sake Brewery Shop and Main House (玉泉堂酒造店舗兼主屋, Gyokusendō Shuzō Tenpo-ken-shuoku) is a two-storey timber shop and residence built in 1875 in Takada, Yoro Town, Gifu Prefecture, and was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 April 2014. It is the front of the brewery: the place where customers came in and the brewing family lived.
The building faces north onto the old road with a frontage of 19 metres and a footprint of 262 square metres. Of the seven brewery buildings registered together, it is the oldest by roughly half a century; the brewhouses behind it went up in 1926. Most of what a passer-by sees of the brewery is this one facade.
Why It Was Registered
The Shop and Main House was registered for its contribution to the historic streetscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out its size, a 19-metre frontage for a combined shop and house, and calls both the exterior and the timber frame substantial and of good quality. Townhouses in Japan usually make up for narrow frontages with deep plots. This one spreads out along the street instead.
The plan shows the same ambition. An earth-floored passage, or Doma, runs from the street to the back along the east side, and to its west are nine rooms arranged three by three. The passage was the shop entrance and very likely the way through to the production buildings behind, so trade, family life and brewing would all have shared one corridor.
The date matters too. When the brewing side was rebuilt in 1926, the Gyokusendo Sake Brewery Shop and Main House stayed as it was, and it has now served the business longer than any other building on the site.
What to Look For
The two floors of the facade are completely different. On the ground floor, projecting wooden lattices (degoshi) push slightly out over the street. The upper floor is sealed in black plaster, with the positions of the posts raised as flat pilasters and lattice windows set between them. Those vertical ribs keep a 19-metre wall from looking monotonous.
Short wing walls (sodekabe) close off each end. From across the road you can read the whole composition: a long box bracketed by the wing walls, with a row of lattices below and a row of latticed windows above.
Next door on the east, the Retail Store has the same black plaster on its upper front, deliberately matched to the main house. Although one is 19 metres wide and the other 5.8 metres, the two read as one continuous street wall.
Visiting
Gyokusendo Sake Brewery Shop and Main House belongs to a working brewery, and the interior is not open to visitors. The earth-floored passage and the nine rooms cannot be seen.
The facade is visible from the road. For the full width, stand on the opposite side. The facade faces north, so the sheen of the black plaster and the relief of the pilasters show best when summer morning or evening light rakes across it. Please stay off the premises and photograph from the public road.
