A Gifu sake brewery founded in 1894

Komachi Sake Brewery (小町酒造, Komachi Shuzō) is a sake brewery in Sohara Ibukicho, Kakamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture, founded in 1894; five of its structures, the shop and main house, the detached wing, the storehouse, the gate and wall and the service gate, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2008/04/18 (Heisei 20).

Its flagship label is Nagaragawa, named for the clear river that runs through Gifu, and the company also calls itself the Nagaragawa brewer. Today the fifth-generation head of the family brews as kuramoto tōji, owner and master brewer in one person. The brewing water is soft groundwater from the underflow of the Nagara River beneath the brewery, and most of the rice is Hida Homare, the sake rice bred in Gifu.

One habit sets Komachi Sake Brewery apart. Ambient music by the composer Fumio Miyashita plays inside the brewery all year round, through fermentation and maturation. The brewers say they want the koji mould and yeast to work in conditions as close to nature as they can make them.

How the compound is laid out

The Komachi Sake Brewery plot is bounded by roads on three sides. The shop and main house stands on the south side facing south, its black-plastered front, hung with a sugidama ball of cedar sprigs, turned to the street. The storehouse is built against it in the southeast corner, and the detached wing sits west of the main house in the southwest of the plot.

South of the detached wing lies a garden. The gate and wall run in a U-shape between the shop and main house and the detached wing, closing the garden in. The service gate opens in the middle of the east side, attached on the north to the main brewing storehouse, which is not registered, and on the south to a lavatory.

Walk the street and the buildings begin to read as a set. Round stones form both the base of the storehouse and the footing of the wall, and black runs along the frontage: black plaster on the shop and main house, black-painted boarding on the storehouse, black plaster again on the street side of the wall. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits the storehouse with giving the street its calm character and picks out the round-stone masonry of the wall as the memorable face of the compound.

Five registered structures and their dates

The five registered on 2008/04/18 are the Komachi Sake Brewery Shop and Main House (registration number 21-0160), the Detached Wing (21-0161), the Storehouse (21-0162), the Gate and Wall (21-0163) and the Service Gate (21-0164). All five were registered on the same ground, as structures that contribute to the historic landscape of the country.

By the Agency's dates the oldest is the service gate of 1897, put up three years after the brewery opened. The detached wing followed in 1912 and the storehouse in 1925, the gate and wall belong to the early Shōwa period (1926 onward), and the shop and main house of 1954 is the newest. More than half a century of building adds up to a single compound.

Visiting and the brewery shop

The buildings are a family home and a working brewery, and the grounds are not open. The brewery states plainly on its website that it does not offer brewery tours. Of the five registered structures, the easiest to see from outside are the shop and main house and the storehouse on the south street, the street face of the wall, and the service gate on the east road. The detached wing stands behind the walled garden and cannot be seen up close.

A shop space on the property trades as the Nagaragawa Kuramoto direct shop, selling the brewery's sake and liqueurs. It opens Monday to Friday, normally between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and closes on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and some seasonal days; each month's closing days are posted in the news section of the brewery's website (checked October 2026).

There is no published guidance on photography. If you photograph the exterior from the street, keep in mind that this is a home and a workplace.

Getting there

The nearest station is Rokken on the Meitetsu Kakamigahara Line, which the brewery puts at a 30-minute walk, about 2.5 km. Sohara Station on the JR Takayama Main Line is about a 31-minute walk, about 2.6 km. The website does not mention parking, so if you plan to drive, call ahead (058-382-0077).
