Retirement Quarters Behind the Storehouses

The Shomura Family Residence Annex (庄村家住宅附属屋) is an annex of a merchant house of about the late Meiji era in Shimadani, Hachiman-cho, Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 28, 2001 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a 2-storey timber building roofed in galvanized steel sheet, with a building area of 72 square metres; registration number 21-0049.

Rooms for a Retired Head of the House

The Shomura Family Residence Annex stands west of the storehouses and is said to have served as retirement quarters (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Its south part is a 2-storey timber structure with board-floored rooms on both levels. The north part rests on a high base of rounded cobblestones faced with clapboard, and on top of it sits a timber tatami room with an alcove and shelves, so that the whole reads as a 2-storey building (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that the tatami room and its surroundings are treated simply in the sukiya style, and registered the annex as a model of design.

What to Look For

Notice how the two halves differ (Agency for Cultural Affairs): plain board-floored rooms stacked in the south part, and in the north a tatami room lifted onto a high stone base.

The room, with its alcove and shelves, is finished in a restrained sukiya style.

Visiting

The annex stands behind the main house, on the river side of the plot. No official information on access was found; please do not enter the property.
