What misedana-zukuri means

Misedana-zukuri is a form of small shrine hall that has no steps at the front. Instead, a plank shelf projects forward from the level of the sanctum floor, in place of the stair a worshipper would otherwise climb. The name is usually taken to compare this ledge to a misedana, the display shelf at the front of a medieval shop.

Most examples are one bay wide and roofed in the nagare-zukuri manner, with the front slope carried forward. Japanese records put the bay count and roof form in front of the name, as in one-bay nagare misedana-zukuri or three-bay nagare misedana-zukuri. Not every example is nagare: the Shinmeisha at Tsuso Imai Shrine in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, built in 1780, is recorded as a one-bay misedana-zukuri with a gabled roof entered from the eaves side.

Many of these shrines stand on a grid of timber sills laid on the ground, and one explanation is that this made such small buildings easy to move.

What to look for

If a hall has no front steps and a plank shelf juts out before its doors, it is misedana-zukuri. Look beside or behind the main sanctuary, where subsidiary shrines stand in rows; many are housed inside a protective outer shed.

The form is normally tiny, which is why the Agency for Cultural Affairs remarks on the exceptions. The Goryo Shrine hall at Muko Shrine in Kyoto Prefecture, from the mid-Edo period, is described as fairly large for a misedana-zukuri, and so is the Shinmeisha hall at Hatazu Shrine in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, from the early Edo period.

Keep halls recorded as misedana-zukuri apart from those that merely borrow the look. The Tachiki Shrine hall at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka is described as having an outer room in the misedana manner while following Sumiyoshi-zukuri overall, and should not be called misedana-zukuri outright.
