What ōbei-zukuri means
Ōbei-zukuri is a townhouse form found in Osaka and elsewhere, with a high wall and gate or entrance on the street and the main house set back behind a front garden. From the street only the wall and gate are visible. It is said to be common for townhouses built purely as residences without a shopfront.
It differs from ordinary townhouses with a shop block on the street, and from Omoteya-zukuri with separate shop and residential blocks, in presenting a wall to the street. The front garden creates a quiet domestic space in the middle of the town.
Reading the records and the street
Records use phrases such as so-called ōbei-zukuri or in ōbei-zukuri style. The Yamano family house and wall in Nishitenma, Kita-ku, Osaka, of about 1918, has a wall and entrance on the street built as one with the house, and the main house behind a front garden; three rooms line an earth-floored passage, and the upper floor has a reception room and a Western-style study. The record values it as a rare surviving so-called ōbei-zukuri townhouse in central Osaka. The main house of the Kumagai family in Shimogyo, Kyoto, the residence of a kimono merchant, has no earth floor inside and Western rooms at the front on both floors, and is described as a strongly modern house composed in ōbei-zukuri style.
On site, look for a wall and gate along the street with the roof of the main house visible behind.
