What raden is
Raden cuts thin pieces from the iridescent inner layer of shell and sets them into a Urushi ground to form a pattern. Because the colour shifts with the angle of view, a flat surface gains depth.
It has been used since the Heian period. A writing box with cormorants on a sandbar, a Heian work held by the Kyoto National Museum, is designated an Important Cultural Property.
It is usually combined with Maki-e. A Kamakura-period writing box with chrysanthemums by a fence is described by Cultural Heritage Online as a domed box with rounded corners and an overlapping lid edged in silver, its lid worked over a dense gold ground with a fence and chrysanthemums as its subject, rocks and grasses in the foreground and small birds among the branches, all rendered in shell, with parts of the shell cut through or engraved and finished in sprinkled gold to bring out petals and feathers.
The division of labour is clear: shell for the large forms, sprinkled gold for the detail, with cutting and engraving used alongside.
In architecture, and in export wares
Buildings use it too. The Konjikido at Chusonji in Iwate Prefecture, completed in 1124 and recorded as a National Treasure, is described as having arabesques of this work over a dense gold ground on the four columns, Nageshi and Kumimono of its Naijin, with bodhisattvas painted in gold lacquer on the columns themselves.
By the Momoyama period wares were being made for export. A box with cross and swastika arabesque held by the MOA Museum is described as a rectangular box with flush-fitting lid, its black lacquered exterior inlaid with lotus arabesque in shell, one of the wares produced under the influence of contact with the West from the late Muromachi into the Momoyama period, in which that foreign flavour shows clearly and the inlay is of fine design.
Those wares form a group born of European contact, and the choice of cross and swastika motifs says as much.
On site, move as you look. Areas that turn blue or green as the angle changes are shell; the glitter differs from the steady gold of Kinpaku or sprinkled lacquer.
