What sanjū banjin means
The sanjū banjin are thirty deities believed to guard the Lotus Sutra. Each is thought to take one of the thirty days of the month in turn, and they are also called simply banjin. Okayama Prefecture explains that temples of the Nichiren line have a banjindō enshrining the thirty guardian deities of the Lotus Sutra.
The thirty are drawn from prominent deities of shrines around Japan, such as those of Ise, Hachiman and Kasuga. The idea of Japanese gods protecting a Buddhist scripture rests on the historical blending of Shinto and Buddhist belief. Myoshoji in Suginami, Tokyo, is said to have begun in the fourteenth century when the thirty guardian deities, including Amaterasu, Hachiman and Kasuga, were invited there to protect the Lotus Sutra.
Reading the records and the building
Buildings for the thirty deities are called banjindō or sanjū banjindō, and most stand in the precincts of Nichiren temples. The banjindō of Honrenji in Setouchi, Okayama, an Important Cultural Property of the Muromachi period, has three shrines side by side within a tiled shelter, with an altar to the thirty deities in the sanctuary of the largest. The banjindō of Myohonji in Kibichuo, Okayama, is a one-bay nagare-zukuri shrine to the thirty guardians with lavish carved ornament. The sanjū banjindō of Myojoji in Hakui, Ishikawa, a three-bay nagare-zukuri building of 1614, is also an Important Cultural Property. The banjindō of Renjoji in Nantan, Kyoto, is recorded with five shrine shelves behind its sanctuary, conveying banjin devotion.
Banjindō often take the form of a Shinto sanctuary, such as nagare-zukuri, even within a temple precinct. On site, a shrine-like building inside a temple may well be a banjindō.
