About the Former Matsuoka Shoten

The Former Matsuoka Shoten (旧松岡商店) is a 1935 merchant's premises in the textile town of Kiryu at Eiraku-cho, Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, whose single-storey timber office and two-storey timber storehouse were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties (structures) on November 10, 2005 (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Kiryu City).

According to Kiryu City, a cast nameplate reading "Matsuoka Shoten, proprietor Terauchi Michiji" hangs beside the office entrance. The office and the fabric inspection room meet in an L, with the storehouse set inside the angle and a receiving area to the south.

Two Buildings

The office is a single-storey timber building with a Western-style front of brick-coloured tiles, comprising two office rooms, a room for inspecting woven goods and a receiving area entered from the street. A floral relief and a round window are features, and the hand-cranked roller shutters are original (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Kiryu City).

The storehouse stands east-west between the office and the main house: two storeys of timber with mortar walls and a separate gabled metal roof, which replaced an original flat mortar roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Kiryu City).

Visiting and Location

The address is 6-7 Eiraku-cho, Kiryu City. No public opening information has been confirmed, so view the buildings from the street.
