About Kiryu Church, United Church of Christ in Japan

Kiryu Church, United Church of Christ in Japan (日本基督教団桐生教会教会堂, Nihon Kirisuto Kyōdan Kiryū Kyōkai Kyōkaidō) is a single-storey wooden church in Nishiki-cho, Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, built in 1930 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2024. Kiryu City calls it the oldest surviving church building in the city.

Kiryu Church was the first Protestant congregation in the Kiryu area. According to the city, it was founded in 1878 in Sakaino-cho, moved to Honcho 6-chome in 1902, and in 1930 came to its present site, where it built this church and a pastor's house. The pastor's house was demolished and rebuilt in 2019.

The lot, 568 tsubo in the old unit of measure, was donated by Hori Yūhei, a church elder who ran a weaving business. The Ogawa firm, still in business today, designed and built the church.

A Church in a Textile Town

Kiryu Church was registered on December 3, 2024, as number 10-0352, under the criterion of buildings that serve as a model of design.

Kiryu City presents the church as a record of how Christianity became entwined with the modernization of the local silk-weaving industry. At the Horisuke weaving mill, founded in 1905, Hori Yūhei used Protestant ideals of philanthropy in training his workers, and it was the same man who gave the church its land.

In announcing the recommendation, Gunma Prefecture pointed to a worship space kept restrained and dignified by avoiding showy ornament, and cared for by the congregation for decades. Typhoon Kathleen flooded the building in September 1947, yet the pulpit, pews and other furnishings were preserved.

The building has been altered over time. The south side room was rebuilt and enlarged in 1956, the north side of the interior remodeled in 1969, and the interior and exterior renovated in 1992.

What to Look For

The church stands in the town south of JR Kiryu Station, facing north, its entrance in the gable end of a sheet-metal roof of the Kirizuma-zukuri type. The street front is the thing to see.

At ground level 3 pointed arches line up, the center one recessed to form an entrance alcove. Above it is a trefoil-arched window with a small balcony in front. The walls are mortar, given a rough, pebbly finish in the manner the Japanese call German wall.

Inside, the church has a single aisle, and a pointed arch frames the altar. The scissor truss that carries the roof, its members crossing like the blades of shears, is left exposed overhead and draws the eye upward.
