Takiguchi Family Residence Guest Hall and Connecting Corridor

The Takiguchi Family Residence Guest Hall and Connecting Corridor (瀧口家住宅客殿及び渡廊下, Takiguchi-ke Jūtaku Kyakuden oyobi Watari-rōka) is a reception wing and linking passage in Haruta-cho, Shobara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, built around 1926 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 27 March 2018.

The guest hall stands west of the main house and is joined to it by the corridor. The hall is a single-storey timber building of 113 square metres; the corridor, also single-storey timber, covers 22 square metres. Both have tiled roofs. It is the youngest of the nine registered Takiguchi structures, added nearly a quarter of a century after the clinic opened around 1902.

A Wing Built for Guests

As the name says, the Takiguchi Family Residence Guest Hall and Connecting Corridor was built to receive visitors. The official description notes that the reception rooms used carefully chosen timber and that design attention reached even the Todobukuro, the boxes that hold the storm shutters when they are slid open. When the owner lavishes care on something so utilitarian, you can assume the rest of the room was treated with equal ambition.

The description also singles out the hall's height. Although single-storey, it stands tall, and its Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof carries shachi ridge tiles, giving the building real weight. The Council for Cultural Affairs picked out the same roof and tiles when it recommended the registration.

What to Look for at the Guest Hall and Corridor

A corridor divided by a wall

The connecting corridor is split lengthwise by a central wall. Its north side leads to the guest rooms; its south side to the master's study and a toilet. Under one roof, guests and the head of the household moved along separate paths. That is the key idea of the Takiguchi Family Residence Guest Hall and Connecting Corridor, and it continues the front-and-back logic of the main house.

Shachi on a single-storey roof

Shachi are mythical creatures with a tiger's head and a fish's body, best known from the roofs of castle keeps. Setting them on the ridge of a single-storey guest hall announced that this was the most formal building on the estate.

Facing the garden

The guest hall faces the garden on the reception side of the main house, screened from the entrance court by the middle gate and side wall. The front rooms of the main house and the guest hall beyond the corridor likely worked as one continuous setting for hospitality.

Visiting the Takiguchi Family Residence Guest Hall and Connecting Corridor

The Takiguchi Family Residence Guest Hall and Connecting Corridor is part of a private home with no published interior opening. Set inside the walled grounds west of the main house, it is hard to see from outside. Please do not look over the walls or enter the property.
