About the Endo Family Residence Wall
The Endo Family Residence Wall (遠藤家住宅塀, Endō-ke Jūtaku Hei) is a stone and brick boundary wall built around 1919 at 5-18 Minami 6-jo Nishi in Chuo Ward, Sapporo, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 7, 2014.
The Endo Family Residence Wall encloses the estate on all four sides and runs 161 meters in total. The east, south and west sides are built of Sapporo nanseki, the soft volcanic stone of the Sapporo area; the north side is brick and includes a gateway. It is registered as a single structure.
Why the Wall Was Registered
The Endo Family Residence Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with giving a nightlife district a stretch of street with real dignity.
Most of the Endo buildings stand inside the enclosure, so this wall is the first thing passers-by see. The two stone storehouses use its east side as their outer walls, and the main house lends its own north wall to the brick side. The Endo Family Residence Wall and the buildings together make up the outer shell of the estate.
Rock-Faced Stone in Alternating Courses
On the east, south and west, the stones of the Endo Family Residence Wall are rock-faced: only the edges were dressed, and the face of each block was left bulging. Every stone stands out in relief, and when the sun comes across the wall at a low angle the shadows deepen.
The stones are laid in level Nunozumi courses, but the courses alternate between taller and shorter blocks. That rhythm keeps a long wall from becoming monotonous, and if you follow the joint lines as you walk you can see the heights change from one course to the next.
The Brick North Side and Geometric Capitals
The north side of the Endo Family Residence Wall is brick, and partway along it the north wall of the main house takes over, so wall and building run on as one surface along the street.
Toward the east end of the north side stands a pair of gate posts, and further posts mark both corners of the east side. All of them are topped with capitals in a geometric design, small decorative accents placed at the points where a long wall turns or opens.
Seeing the Endo Family Residence Wall
Because the Endo Family Residence Wall is the outer boundary of the estate, every section that faces a street can be seen freely, and it is the one registered structure you can get right up to. On the south street the stone wall runs out on either side of the front gate; on the north street there is the brick wall with its gate posts. How much of the east and west sides faces public roads is worth checking when you are there.
The rock-faced finish shows best when you look along the wall at a slant. The grounds themselves are not open. No official guidance on photography could be found as of October 2026.
