From the southern shore of the lake, a quiet forest trail winds for about 1.4 kilometers through the moss-covered understory of an Akaezomatsu (Sakhalin spruce) primeval forest. The trail emerges suddenly at the foot of two parallel cascades dropping roughly 20 to 30 meters down a wall of andesitic lava. Today, all commercially mined manganese ore comes from deposits formed in past geological eras, much of it imported from Australia and South Africa.

This combined microbial action produces more than one ton of black manganese sediment every year. To the naked eye it looks simply like dark mud—"manganese mud," as researchers call it—but under a microscope, the algal mats are revealed to be threaded with tiny plate-like manganese crystals. Layers of manganese ore found in nearby strata dating back four to five thousand years show that, given time, this soft mud gradually matures into a dense, stable mineral deposit. In effect, the waterfall is performing in real time a process that elsewhere on Earth requires geological ages.

What makes the site truly remarkable is its connection to the deep history of life. The microbial production of manganese oxides is thought to be similar to processes that began on Earth around 3.5 billion years ago, when the first photosynthetic organisms began to enrich the atmosphere and oceans with oxygen. In other words, the falls offer a living model of the conditions under which the modern oxygen-rich Earth—and the complex life it supports—first came into being.

Why It Was Designated a National Natural Monument

On September 6, 2000, the Japanese government designated Onneto Yu-no-taki and its surroundings as a National Natural Monument under the official name "Onneto Yu-no-taki Manganese Oxide Formation Site." The designation protects not only the rocks and the falling water but the springs, the microbial communities, and the entire ecosystem that together produce the phenomenon.

The reasoning given by the cultural authorities highlights three layers of value. First, it is the largest manganese-oxide formation site observable on land anywhere in the world. Reaching the falls is an experience in itself. From the southern parking area of Lake Onneto, a flat forest road of about 1.4 to 1.7 kilometers leads through the spruce forest. The walk takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes and is gentle enough for beginners, though sturdy shoes are recommended because the path can be damp.

At the falls, visitors emerge into a small clearing with a wooden rest hut and basic facilities. A short bridge crosses the stream and brings you close to the cascade. The water is warm to the touch—a curious sensation that immediately distinguishes this waterfall from any other. The blackness of the rock, the steam rising into the cool forest air, and the play of mosses and lichens in unusual colors all combine into an otherworldly scene.
