Homei Sake Brewery Office No. 2 at the Southern Entrance

Homei Sake Brewery Office No. 2 (鳳鳴酒造事務室二, Hōmei Shuzō Jimushitsu Ni) is a late Meiji-era office building of a sake brewery in Gofukumachi, Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on September 19, 2003. It stands toward the south of the Homei brewery site, southwest of the Brewing Storehouse.

It is a single-storey wooden building with a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) pantiled roof and a building area of 43 square meters, rectangular in plan with its ridge running north to south, and it contains a single office room. It is the only one of the nine registered Homei buildings for which the Agency for Cultural Affairs database names an owner: Homei Shuzo Co., Ltd.

The Back Door of the Brewery

The shop and museum face the street on the north, but the lot runs deep and meets another road at its southern end. The Agency notes that Homei Sake Brewery Office No. 2 stands near the entrance from that southern road, with its front door on the south side.

If the north street was the front door for customers, the south entrance was the way into the working brewery, where rice, supplies and the brewery hands came and went, and the office was placed on that side. The company's head office is still registered at 73 Gofukumachi.

Why Office No. 2 Was Registered

Homei Sake Brewery Office No. 2 was registered as contributing to the historic landscape. The Agency describes it as one of the core facilities of the brewery's working area, which extended from the center of the lot toward the south.

Office No. 1, which shares the name, is a one-room hut of 6.3 square meters beside the main house on the north street. Office No. 2 is nearly seven times larger and carries a more formal hip-and-gable roof. A small office attached to the shop at the front and an office running the brewery at the back: their different roles show in their size and form.

Visiting Office No. 2

Homei Sake Brewery Office No. 2 is not part of the museum route described on the brewery's website, and the interior is not open. The route begins in the main house on the north side and does not lead round to the southern entrance.

The sources consulted do not show how much of the building can be seen from the southern road. The south side of the site is the company's place of business and should not be entered without permission.
