The Largest Building at Jorakuji

The Jorakuji Temple Main Hall (常楽寺本堂, Jōraku-ji Hondō) is a south-facing Buddhist hall of 1692 on the west side of Jorakuji Temple in Higashikanki-cho, Kakogawa City, Hyogo Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 31 July 2007.

It measures 19 metres by 17 metres, with a hip-and-gable roof (Irimoya-zukuri) in heavy clay tiles (Hongawarabuki) and a Kōhai, a projecting porch roof, over the front steps. At 374 square metres it covers more than ten times the combined area of the other three registered buildings.

In 1722 a formal entrance wing was added to the east. The registration covers the Jorakuji main hall as it stands now, the hall of the Genroku era joined to the entrance of the Kyoho era.

Why It Was Registered

The hall was listed as a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out its plan: a broad aisle across the front, behind it an outer hall (Gejin), and at the back an inner sanctuary (Naijin) described as convex, flanked by side bays. The Agency calls this a Jodo-shu main hall.

Halls of the Pure Land school separate the sanctuary, where the Amida image sits, from the space where worshippers gather to chant. Here the sanctuary is recorded as convex in plan, which reads as its central part projecting forward into the outer hall, with side bays to either side and the broad front aisle beyond. It shows the kind of hall a family temple of the former castle lords built in Harima at the end of the seventeenth century.

The Agency also notes the vivid bird-and-flower paintings in the coffered ceiling (Gō-tenjō) over the sanctuary, colour that has survived more than three centuries.

What to Look At

The great roof and porch

From the front, the tiled hip-and-gable roof spreads wide over the porch roof that shelters the steps. At 19 metres, the facade of the Jorakuji main hall is the longest of any building in the grounds.

The front aisle

A broad aisle runs the width of the front, a buffer between the courtyard and the outer hall. On service days it is where the temple and its grounds meet.

The entrance wing of 1722

East of the hall, the entrance wing added in 1722 runs east to west and turns a formal step-up entrance (Shikidai) to the south under a cusped, wave-shaped gable. A shikidai was where guests of rank were received, and the curved gable marks that status. Seen beside the hall, the two parts are three decades apart.

Inside the hall

According to the temple's website, the principal image is Amida Nyorai, attended by the bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi. The right-hand side bay holds memorial tablets for the patriarchs Shandao and Shoku along with past abbots; the left holds Honen, an image of Kannon and tablets for the Tokugawa shoguns.

Visiting

The exterior of the Jorakuji Temple Main Hall can be seen from the grounds. The main gate lies on the same west side, so walking north from it brings the porch and the great roof straight into view. Walk round to the east side for the cusped gable of the entrance wing.

As of October 2026 we found no regular opening of the interior. If you hope to see the painted ceiling, ask the temple on 079-432-3866. The temple's website has 360-degree images of the interior that give a good idea of the space.

Behind the hall is the grave of Kanki Yorisada, the castle lord killed when Kanki Castle fell in 1578. If you visit it, be mindful of families tending their own graves.
