About the Kajiwara Family Residence Storehouse
The Kajiwara Family Residence Storehouse (梶原家住宅土蔵, Kajiwara-ke Jūtaku Dozō) is an earthen storehouse of 1842 standing northwest of the main house of the Kajiwara Family Residence (Naka-Nishi-Kajiwara) in Tenjin, Oshio, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture; moved to its present site in the late Taisho era, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2009.
The Storehouse is a two-storey dozo-zukuri building running north to south under a gabled roof of round tiles (hongawarabuki). It measures 9.8 by 4.9 meters, with a building area of 49 square meters.
A Dated Ridge Tag and a Move
According to Himeji City, the ridge tag of the Kajiwara Family Residence Storehouse is dated "Tenpo 13, third month" (1842) and names the master builder Okamoto Gisuke (岡本儀輔, reading unconfirmed) of Matsubara village. Both the year of construction and the builder are therefore known.
The storehouse was moved in the late Taisho era, around the time the estate's main house was built in 1922. It seems the family brought in a storehouse some 80 years old and paired it with their new house, but its original location and the reason for the move are not recorded.
Two Rooms and Careful Details
The Kajiwara Family Residence Storehouse faces east, with a canopy over its front. The walls are white shikkui plaster, and the lower part of the front is protected by overlapping weatherboards (shitami-ita).
Inside, it is divided into a northern and a southern room, each with its own door and window. One building thus works as two independent stores.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the brackets (mochiokuri) under the canopy and the ornament above the doors as carefully finished. It is registered as contributing to the historic landscape.
