An inner storehouse joined to the main house
The Tanaka Family Residence Storehouse (田中家住宅土蔵, Tanaka-ke Jūtaku Dozō) in Tonouchi-chō, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a two-story earthen-walled storehouse from around 1887, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on September 10, 2010 (number 28-0457). It is an inner storehouse attached to the northwest corner of the main house, with one door opening from inside the house and another on its east face.
Because it opens straight off the living quarters, the family could move goods in and out without stepping outside. The Tanaka Family Residence Storehouse was registered with the main house, east gate and outer wall as a group of four.
Cut-stone base and a heavy tiled roof
The storehouse measures 5.7 by 3.6 meters (the Ketayuki and Harima spans) and covers 20 square meters (Amagasaki City gives 20.32). It is built in the Dozo-zukuri earthen-wall manner, two stories tall, under a gabled roof.
It rests on a base of cut stone. The walls are finished in lime plaster down to about waist height, below which vertical boards (Tateita-bari) are fixed. The roof is laid in Hongawarabuki, with round and flat tiles alternating. Of the four registered Tanaka structures, the Tanaka Family Residence Storehouse is the only one with this heavier, more formal tiling; the house, gate and wall all use pantiles. The storehouse was repaired in 1995.
Part of the street front
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the storehouse, with the outer wall running east from it and a newer storehouse lined up to its west, shapes a historic street front. Its white plaster and dark boarded base match the wall, so the storehouse and wall read as one continuous band.
The newer storehouse next door is not part of the registration, but from outside the two storehouses appear side by side.
Visiting
The Tanaka Family Residence Storehouse belongs to a private home, and Amagasaki City states that the property is not open to the public (as of October 2026). The interior cannot be visited. The outer face beside the wall may be visible from the street, but please do not peer in or linger.
