Yutoya Ryokan

Yutoya Ryokan (ゆとうや旅館) in Kinosakicho Yushima, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a long-established inn of Kinosaki Onsen whose front gate and walls of 1926, Eikitei wing of 1928, storehouse of 1932 and mid-Showa connecting corridor were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on August 4, 2015 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All four are owned by Yutoya Co., Ltd.

The gate faces the road on the north of the site, the Eikitei stands to the east, the storehouse in the south-west corner, and the corridor links the buildings in the south (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Four Properties

The Eikitei is a separate wing that also housed members of the imperial family, pairing the single-storey Eikitei and the two-storey Furotei in echelon. The yakuimon-type front gate shows an inventive design, with thick concrete posts finished in rust-red gravel set with cobbles and slender posts above carrying the eaves (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The storehouse is a large store of five bays by four with namako tiling and mock-stone mortar at its base. The corridor, with a bathroom and an arbour along it, plays with hexagonal plans and lattice walls inspired by the nearby Genbudo Cave and pine, bamboo and plum windows; it alone of the four was registered as a model of design (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
