Black doors on a white wall
The Former Nomura Sugar Store Document Storehouse (旧野村さとう店文庫蔵, Kyū Nomura Satō-ten Bunkogura) is an early Meiji era earthen-walled storehouse at the north end of the Nomura plot in Chuo 1-chome, Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1 August 2016. It has 2 stories, a tiled roof and a building area of 26 square meters, the smallest of the 4 registered buildings on the plot.
A bunkogura is the storehouse a household keeps for its papers, utensils and possessions, as distinct from the storehouse that holds the merchandise. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that this one held family goods, hina dolls among them.
It stands at the back of the plot, north of the side storehouse, with its ridge running north to south and its entrance opening to the south. Unlike the shop and the side storehouse, which present themselves to the highway, the Former Nomura Sugar Store Document Storehouse faces inward.
The dating is early Meiji, 1868 to 1882. No later repair is recorded for it, although the other 3 buildings on the plot were worked on in the 2000s.
Why it was registered
The criterion is the contribution the building makes to the historic landscape of the country, and the register number is 08-0292. What the official description singles out is the treatment of the openings.
The doorway on the ground floor and the window above both carry hung doors finished in black Shikkui lime plaster, made by working a black pigment such as pine soot into the final coat and burnishing it. Against the white wall the openings read as dark voids. Bright weather sharpens the contrast rather than softening it.
The joint between door and frame uses a technique called kakego-nuri. Plaster is built up on both the door edge and the frame in matching stepped profiles, so that closing the door interlocks the two and leaves no straight gap. In a fire those steps break the path that flame and smoke would take. On a storehouse this small, the accuracy of that joint is most of the craftsmanship.
One side of the building faces off the plot altogether. Fudoin, a temple, adjoins to the east, and the Former Nomura Sugar Store Document Storehouse shows its plastered wall to the temple approach. The Agency for Cultural Affairs cites that white wall on the approach as part of the historic setting the building helps form.
What to look at
26 square meters is not much floor: two small tatami rooms would cover it. The building is nevertheless 2 full stories with thick walls, and inside it is the height rather than the footprint that registers.
The Former Nomura Sugar Store Document Storehouse now holds the gallery of the Tsuchiura Machikado-gura Nomura facility. Local artists show work here, and on exhibition days you can walk in. A small white-walled room with few openings turns out to be a straightforward space to hang things in.
The record of hina dolls stored here connects to something still happening in the town. Each year from February into early March, the Tsuchiura Hina Doll Festival makes the Machikado-gura buildings its main venue, and dolls handed down in merchant households go on display along with hanging cloth dolls. Knowing what this storehouse held changes how the exhibition reads.
Once you have reached the back of the plot, turn around. Shop and main house at the street, side storehouse to its east, brick storehouse and this one at the rear: the whole sequence lines up in a single view.
Visiting the Former Nomura Sugar Store Document Storehouse
The Former Nomura Sugar Store Document Storehouse is open as part of Tsuchiura Machikado-gura Nomura. The facility opens from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closes from 29 December to 3 January. Admission is free.
Access to the interior depends on the gallery programme. The building may be shut on days with no exhibition, or while a booking is being set up. Check the schedule with the Tsuchiura City Tourism Association.
From Tsuchiura Station on the JR Joban Line the walk takes about 10 minutes by the west exit, and the storehouse is a further short distance through the plot. Drivers should allow roughly 10 minutes off the Joban Expressway at Sakuratsuchiura or Tsuchiura-kita.
No photography rule is published. During exhibitions the subject would be someone else's work, so ask at the gallery before taking pictures.
