A Low, Neat Early Meiji House

The Former Onose Family Residence Main House (旧小野瀬家住宅主屋) is an early Meiji single-storey timber main house at the Former Onose Family Residence in Kamicho, Ryugasaki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, which in 2004 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a tiled roof and a building area of 65 square metres, registered as a model of design.

The Agency places it north of the entrance at the back of the shop.

Structure

According to the Agency, it runs north to south, a single-storey timber building with a half-hipped pantiled roof and three rooms of six, six and eight mats in a row, with an alcove and shelves on the west of the eight-mat room.

Verandas run along the east and north sides, with a privy at the northwest corner.

What to Look For

The Agency notes that, compared with the robust early Taisho shop, the house is low and neatly proportioned.

In contrast to the heavy front of the shop, it shows the quiet character of a home behind the business.
