A castle storehouse turned shopfront
Sakacho Honten Shop Storehouse, also recorded as the Former Koga Castle Document Storehouse, is a 2-storey earthen-walled shop building in Chuo-cho, Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture, dated to the late Edo period and listed on 26 September 2000 as a national Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
It fronts the old Daiku-cho street, the carpenters' quarter of the castle town, and it is the building that gives the Sakacho compound its face. The plan measures 4 Ken across the front and 3 Ken deep; Koga City records 7.21 metres along the ridge and 5.45 metres across, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs gives a footprint of 55 square meters. Walls are Dozo-zukuri, the roof is tiled, and an earthen canopy runs along the ground floor at the front.
The building did not begin as a shop. It is held to have stood inside Koga Castle as the document storehouse, and to have been bought and re-erected here after the castle was dismantled and sold off following the abolition order of 1873. The Agency dates the original construction to the late Edo period, in a range of 1751 to 1829.
Keeping the old rules
The phrase the Agency uses about Sakacho Honten Shop Storehouse is that its structure and design retain the old regulation. That is a technical claim, and it can be checked against the fabric.
Posts are set at half-Ken intervals right around the perimeter, a much denser spacing than a town shop of the same size would need. On the ground floor the ceiling is formed by the sleeper beams that carry the floor above, left exposed rather than boarded over. Both belong to a building specified for storage under official rules, not to ordinary merchant construction.
This is why the criterion applied at registration was the one for buildings that would not be easy to reproduce, entered as number 08-0029. Koga Castle stretched across what is now Sakuracho and Chuo-cho from the Kamakura period until the Meiji era, and almost nothing above ground survives of it. Sakacho Honten Shop Storehouse and the side storehouse next door are, in the Agency's phrasing, among the few remaining traces.
Under the earthen canopy
Approach on foot along the old street and stop under the canopy before going in. On a Dozo-zukuri shop the canopy is commonly plastered in earth like the walls behind it, and standing beneath it puts you in the position a customer of this shop has occupied for well over a century.
Look at the proportions from across the road. A frontage of 4 Ken against a depth of 3 gives a nearly square footprint, squat rather than the long narrow plan usual in a castle-town shop. Sakacho Honten Shop Storehouse kept the shape it was given inside the castle, and the compound was arranged around it afterwards rather than the other way round.
Inside, look up at the exposed beams of the ground-floor ceiling, and then at where the posts land along the walls. Shop fittings have come and gone; that framing has not. To the right, the side storehouse turns its gable end to the street, its ridge crossing this one at a right angle. The two came out of the same castle and were re-erected together.
Open as a shop
Sakacho Honten Shop Storehouse is in daily commercial use as a shop within the Koga no Oyasumidokoro Sakacho complex, with a small gallery alongside that is hired out for exhibitions. The operator gives its hours as 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the site closes over the New Year period. There is no admission charge for entering the building. The telephone number is 0280-22-2781.
Because it is a working shop rather than a display room, the interior is open through the day without any need to book, though the ground floor is fitted out with shelving that hides parts of the wall.
From JR Koga Station on the Utsunomiya Line the walk is about 9 minutes. By car, allow roughly 30 minutes from the Kuki or Tatebayashi interchanges on the Tohoku Expressway, or about 35 minutes from Sakai-Koga on the Ken-O Expressway. Three car parks may be used: the Sakacho car park, Chuo-cho Hiroba and the Koga Literature Museum.
No photography rule is published. The street elevation can be photographed from the pavement; inside, ask a member of staff first, since the gallery may be holding an exhibition with its own conditions.
