About Gotokuan

Gotokuan (五徳庵, Gotoku-an) is a small residential compound in the former samurai quarter of Daishoji Nishikicho, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, whose four structures, a late Edo-period gate, a 1900 main house, a 1919 annex and a 1949 warehouse, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan on February 9, 2005.

Daishoji was the castle town of the Daishoji Domain, a 100,000-koku branch of the Maeda family's Kaga Domain. Its planners laid out the lord's residence, samurai houses, artisans' streets and a temple district in distinct zones. According to Kaga City, the land Gotokuan stands on lay in the district where the domain's middle-ranking samurai lived during the Edo period. The four registered structures carry consecutive registration numbers, 17-0124 to 17-0127, and belong to NPO Rekimachi Center Daishoji.

The main house and the annex were registered as buildings that serve as models of design, and the warehouse and the gate as contributors to the historic landscape. All four are Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, a status granted by registration rather than designation.

How Gotokuan Grew Over a Century

Put in order of age, the buildings of Gotokuan span roughly a hundred years. The dates recorded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs are:

• Gate: late Edo period (1830 to 1867)
• Main house: 1900
• Annex: 1919
• Warehouse: 1949

The gate is the survivor from the domain era. Its posts and crossbeam are old timbers, and its form is that of a gate for a middle-ranking samurai household. The main house came about three decades after the domains were abolished in 1871, yet the Agency describes it as a Meiji-period dwelling in the lineage of the middle-ranking samurai residence. In other words, the samurai class had gone, but the old samurai quarter kept building houses on the samurai pattern.

A one-room annex was added in the Taisho era, facing a garden on the north. The warehouse, built just after the Second World War, is the youngest of the four and now forms the street front of Gotokuan together with the gate.

The Layout of Gotokuan

The Gotokuan plot meets the road on its south side and turns east at its northern end, giving it an L shape. Along the road stand the gate, toward the west and set back from the street, and the warehouse at the east end, its ridge running east to west.

Behind them, the main house faces south. A lean-to roof wraps the warehouse on its north and east sides and joins it to the main house. The annex sits at the far eastern corner of the plot, with wide openings toward the north garden.

Seen from the road, the gate and warehouse form the public face of Gotokuan, the main house stands in the middle and the annex is tucked away at the back. The registration follows the same logic: the two street-front structures for their part in the townscape, the two inner buildings for their design. Each member page describes its building in detail.

Visiting Gotokuan

Gotokuan is owned by NPO Rekimachi Center Daishoji, and as of September 2026 we could find no official information on public openings or interior tours. Visitors should stay off the property and view the gate and the warehouse from the road. Anyone hoping to see inside should contact the owner in advance.

No photography policy has been published either. The surrounding streets are residential, so take pictures from the public road and keep clear of neighbors' homes and passing traffic.

The nearest station is Daishoji on the IR Ishikawa Railway. From there Gotokuan is about 1.3 kilometers on foot, roughly a 20-minute walk. Travelers on the Hokuriku Shinkansen can change at Kaga Onsen Station, the next stop on the IR Ishikawa Railway, for Daishoji.
