A richly carved gateway
The gate is where a temple sets its tone, and the Shokoji main gate makes a strong first statement despite its modest span of about 2.6 metres. It is a four-legged gate with a gabled roof of formal round tiles, and it stands at the Nakamachi entrance to the temple, near the memorial buildings for Chiyo-ni.
Compared with the older parts of the temple the gate is recent, completed in 1956, but it was clearly built to impress. Its eaves are unusually dense, and the carving that fills the structure is what a visitor remembers.
Dense bracketing and a dragon
The gate uses projecting bracket sets. On the gable sides a frog-leg strut fills the central bay, while on the long sides projecting brackets flank a central strut. Above, on each gable, a large bottle-shaped strut with flanking wings rises from a projecting rainbow beam, packing the eaves with structure and ornament.
Between the main posts a carved dragon spreads across the opening, and further carving appears on the beam noses and around the doors. The registry recognises this high decorative quality; the gate was registered as a national tangible cultural property in 2011.
Passing through the gate
Because the gate stands at the Nakamachi frontage, close to the open memorial area, it is easy to see and photograph, and it makes a natural starting point for a visit. Look up as you pass to catch the dragon and the crowded bracketing overhead.
Beyond the gate lie the Chiyo-ni Hall, the Sofu-an tea hut and the poet's grave, the parts of Shokoji open to visitors, together with the relic hall that can be entered for a small admission charge.
