The Link Between Shop and Home
The Kurosawa Jisuke Shoten Connecting Corridor (黒沢治助商店渡廊下, Kurosawa Jisuke Shōten Watari-rōka) is a single-storey timber corridor of the late Taisho period (1912 to 1925) that joins the street-front store to the main house of Kurosawa Jisuke Shoten in Fukuoka, Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 November 2009.
At 8.5 by 2.4 metres, with a building area of 21 square metres, it is the smallest of the eight registered structures on the site. It runs east to west under a pantiled roof.
Why It Was Registered: More Than a Passage
The Kurosawa Jisuke Shoten Connecting Corridor was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape. Its plan is more than a walkway. The 2.4-metre width is split lengthwise: the corridor runs along the south side, while a toilet, washroom and storage closets line the north.
Placing these services between the shop and the house made them usable from both, so the daily routes of the staff in the store and the family in the main house crossed within this narrow building.
What to Look For: Tiles, Windows and Fireproof Shutters
On the south face of the Kurosawa Jisuke Shoten Connecting Corridor, the lower wall is faced with tiles and a continuous band of windows runs above it, lighting the corridor. The tiles and generous glazing reflect the newer tastes of the Taisho years.
Fire was not forgotten. The eaves and the Todobukuro shutter boxes are sealed in plaster, and the shutters themselves are fire doors, plastered and clad in copper. Open, the corridor is full of light; shuttered, it becomes a fire-resistant wall. The shutters follow the same specification as those of the main house.
Seeing the Corridor
The Kurosawa Jisuke Shoten Connecting Corridor is tucked between the store and the main house and cannot be seen from the street. No interior opening has been announced (checked 29 September 2026).
The tiled dado and copper-clad shutters are on the south face, which looks into the property, and we found no way to see them from outside. The site is private property, so please stay outside the gate.
