A Pilgrim Railway Station

The JR Zentsuji Station Building (JR善通寺駅本屋) is a single-storey timber station building at Bunkyo-cho, Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, extensively rebuilt in 1922, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 14, 2002 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single storey of timber with a tiled roof and a building area of 301 square metres, with platform canopies of 476 square metres attached; registration number 37-0083, owned by the Shikoku Railway Company.

From Yoshida to Zentsuji

According to the Zentsuji City Tourism Association, the station opened in May 1889 on the Sanuki Railway, a line of about 15.5 kilometres linking Kotohira, Tadotsu and Marugame that carried so many pilgrims to Zentsuji and Kotohira-gu that it was called the pilgrimage railway. Nationalised in 1906, the station was rebuilt in autumn 1922 for army grand manoeuvres held in the area.

Zentsuji City says the station opened in 1889 as Yoshida Station and was later renamed. The JR Zentsuji Station Building is the original timber building of that year, extended with a carriage porch and other parts for the 1922 manoeuvres; it keeps a property plate dated March 30, 1889. Its roof, originally gabled, was rebuilt as a hipped roof in a 1991 renovation.

Value as a Registered Cultural Property

The JR Zentsuji Station Building was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes its position at the urban starting point of central Zentsuji.

Zentsuji City notes that the JR Zentsuji Station Building may be older than Kamezaki Station on the Taketoyo Line, often called the oldest station building still in use in Japan. The station was also recognised as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2009 (Zentsuji City Tourism Association).

What to Look For

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the JR Zentsuji Station Building facing west, 16 by 5 bays, hipped and pan-tiled with exposed timber framing, and a gabled carriage porch with half-timbered detail projecting slightly north of centre on the west front. Japanese touches include boat-shaped bracket blocks.

The Zentsuji City Tourism Association notes that Taisho-era timberwork survives at the front entrance and on the platforms of the JR Zentsuji Station Building; stepping out down the Taisho stone steps, visitors see the green of the Gogaku hills beyond the town.

Visiting

Zentsuji Station is a working station; its building can be seen from outside by anyone, while the platform canopies and footbridge lie within the station and are best seen when travelling by train. The address is 1-7-1 Bunkyo-cho, Zentsuji City.
