A plain structure on the east platform
The Platform 2 shelter stands on the east side of the tracks, the old Sanuki Railway line that runs north to south through the middle of Zentsuji. It is a timber structure over the platform, rectangular in plan, and the smallest of the station's three protected works at about 183 square metres. Like its neighbours it dates from around 1922.
Its logic is regularity. Square posts are set at even intervals, 15 feet along the platform and 9 feet across, so the frame advances in a steady grid. Overhead the roof rests on framing built up mainly from king posts (shinzuka-gumi), the central vertical members of each small truss. There is little ornament: the interest is in the plain, repeating rhythm of the whole.
Why plainness was worth protecting
Not every cultural property is grand. This shelter was registered in 2002 under the criterion for contributing to the historic landscape, precisely because its simple, continuous frame preserves the ordinary look of an early railway platform. It keeps the character of the trackside scene as it stood in the Taisho years.

What to look for
Stand at one end and look down the platform. The even spacing of the posts is the whole point: they recede in a regular measure, and the small king-post trusses repeat above them in the same beat. It is architecture made from rhythm rather than decoration.
Then compare it with the shelter across on Platform 1, with its fanning braces and its join to the depot. Set side by side, the two make clear how the same station could hold both a plain frame and a more inventive one, each doing its work over its own platform.
